Budget Wedding Cake Ideas

One of the most fun aspects of planning the wedding reception is deciding on what kind of cake you will have. However, this can also be a costly dessert, and many brides and grooms on a budget would rather spend that money on their honeymoon. Creating a budget cake doesn’t have to be silly, and can in fact be quite classy. Read on for some great budget wedding cake ideas:

1) Do It Yourself Wedding Cupcakes: This creates a relatively easy and affordable way to have a unique wedding cake! You can also make different flavor layers with this cake and have everything from vanilla and chocolate to red velvet and carrot cake. Bake them in silver, gold or white cupcake papers or ones that will match your decorations for extra flair, and arranged them in a tiered cake style with plates and columns.

2) Find a friend that can bake: Have a friend or family member that is a closet baker or chef? Ask them to create a great wedding cake for you! Chances are, they will do it for free or will just ask for you to buy ingredients, and will make you a wedding cake with something you can’t buy at the store; love.

3) Check your local grocery store: Chances are, your local grocery store has dozens of great designs for beautiful and classy wedding cakes. Grocery store bakeries can create wedding cakes just as beautiful as fancy bakeries, and probably at half the price. Ask your local grocer about the wedding cake options that they offer.

4) Ask for your cake as a gift: If you can’t afford to buy a beautifully crafted cake, ask one or more of your family members if they would like to buy your cake as a wedding gift. If you cannot find a way to tactfully ask, then pass the word along the grapevine through other family members, and someone may take the hint.

5) Don’t mention that its for a wedding!: Many times, those who provide a service, whether it is a limo rental service or a baker, will add on extra fees just because it is for a wedding! Buy your own cake topper or decorations on your own and order a regular cake from your baker. You may find that it is more affordable than you think.

If you create your cake yourself, chances are it will cost a lot less than at a fancy bakery. Plus, you will have more control over how it comes out in the end. You can also experiment with different types of wedding cake than you may have been able to at your bakery, and have different flavors, toppers and designs. Just remember, in the end your cake will only last one night, and will probably end up smashed in your face. With the right amount of imagination and help from a talented family baker, you too can create a great wedding cake on a budget.
