Better’n Peanut Butter? Not Quite

I am a huge fan of peanut butter, so there are very few days that go by that I don’t make something with it. Sometimes it will be a protein shake, other times I will make a peanut butter and banana sandwich, and every once in a while I’ll put it on some celery or some carrots for a snack. I also like to watch my calories, so when I saw Better’n Peanut Butter which purports to offer great taste with 85% less fat and 40% less calories than regular peanut butter I decided to give it a shot.

A quick label check revealed that Better’n Peanut Butter only has 2.5 grams of fat and 100 calories per serving. My Skippy All Natural Peanut Butter had 16 grams of fat and 210 calories, so the facts checked out with regard to nutrition. The question remained, however, if Better’n Peanut Butter could hold up against the taste of Skippy. I gave it a shot in a few different ways:

On a sandwich: 5/5 Stars. Was absolutely fantastic. I had Better’n Peanut Butter both on a peanut butter and banana sandwich and a peanut butter and jelly and I could really not tell that I had switched out my old peanut butter.

On veggies: 3/5 Stars. Not too bad. The texture of the Better’n Peanut Butter was a little different than I was used to and the taste difference is more prevalent than on the sandwich. I could eat Better’n Peanut Butter on celery instead of what I was used to and what I lose in taste could definitely be outweighed by the nutritional benefits, but it definitely was not as good.

In a smoothie: 1/5 Stars. Terrible. I would have to use way more of Better’n Peanut Butter to get the same amount of taste as regular peanut butter. Better’n Peanut butter doesn’t work in a smoothie.

So, while Better’n Peanut Butter definitely does not replace my old jar of Skippy, I will probably keep a jar around for sandwiches. Better’n Peanut Butter was just as good there and I will save some valuable calories.
