Best Mexican Restaurant in Milwaukie, Oregon is Canby Asparagus Farm’s Casa De Tamales

The Casa de Tamales has evolved from a farmers market booth into the best Mexican restaurant in Milwaukie. The Canby Asparagus Farm has been selling locally-grown produce at Portland area farmers markets for many years. True to the name, their feature vegetable is asparagus, but a variety of vegetables is offered throughout the summer. They also serve fresh-cooked meals prepared on a portable grill to hungry market-goers. Over the years the farmers market offerings became very popular and in 2007 they opened a restaurant, Casa de Tamales, in the heart of Milwaukie. In keeping with their farmers market heritage, the Casa de Tamales chefs use fresh produce in preparing home-made recipes.

The menu is limited but offers enough variety to please every palate. Tamales are the specialty but tacos, burritos, and chili rellenos are also standard on the menu. Daily specials supplement the basic menu and delicious deep-fried asparagus is offered when in season. My favorite entrée is the burrito. It is served open-faced and overflowing with fresh grilled vegetables and a choice of meats. This burrito is unlike any I have ever eaten. The menu also includes a variety of breakfast items that are served all day. The three-egg omelet, filled with grilled vegetables, fresh cheese, and a choice of meats, is excellent. The food is flavorful and the portions are large.

The menu items are served a la carte with prices ranging from $6.75 for the tamale to $12.00 for the grilled asparagus with shrimp. Traditional side dishes such as chips with home-made salsa, Mexican rice and freshly-prepared refried beans are available for an additional cost. Refreshments include a variety of interesting soft drinks along with a selection of beer and wine.

The décor of the small dining room can only be described as eclectic. Masks, toys, posters, musical instruments, and many eye-catching items completely cover the walls and ceiling in random order. I have always found the service friendly and helpful. Reservations are not necessary except for large groups.

Casa de Tamales can prepare any of the menu items to go. They also offer catering service, delivering fresh tamales to most of the Portland metropolitan area.
