The first dance is a tradition that’s been upheld for centuries. It was initially used at formal balls as a way for the guest of honor to formally begin the festivities. Today, the idea of a first dance is most closely associated with weddings, and the couple having their first dance together after becoming legally wed. Some couples choose to do an outrageous choreographed dance, and others choose to sway slowly to the song that they’ve spent precious hours choosing. That first dance song, like the first dance itself, is often seen as the most important one.
“Ain’t That a Kick in the Head“ by Dean Martin – This one is a classic, yet it’s fun. It would be ideal for a vintage themed wedding.
“At Last“ by Etta James – It’s the ultimate first dance song, which also means it’s a bit cliché. But it’ll work for anyone who isn’t concerned with their wedding being too, well, wedding-like.
“The Best Is Yet To Come“ by Frank Sinatra – Ol’ Blue Eyes is always a great way to usher in the start of a new life together.
“By My Side“ by Ben Harper – This is one of the songs meant more for swaying than actual dancing. The message is sweet and sincere, and the song is rich. It’s perfect for a low-key wedding.
“Eternal Flame“ by The Bangles – Because of the cheese factor, this is probably only appropriate for an 80’s themed wedding. It’s a lovely song, but it would take a very lighthearted and confident couple to pull it off.
“I Need You“ by Faith Hill and Tim McGraw – It doesn’t get better than dancing to a romantic song by the ultimate country music couple. It’s slow and simple, and not so country to turn off those who aren’t a fan of the genre. The song “It’s Your Love”, also by Hill and McGraw, is another great choice for country fans.
“I Wanna Love You Forever“ by Jessica Simpson – It’s a straightforward ballad about love; an easy pick for a couple who isn’t quite sure of what else to choose. And it would lend itself nicely to a more formal dance for those willing to give it a shot.
“I’m Yours“ by Jason Mraz – Quirky and love filled, even if this isn’t the perfect first dance song for you, it deserves to be played at some point at the reception.
“Swear It Again“ by Westlife – The good thing about this song is that it was never a huge hit, so the guests might not realize that you’re dancing to a boy band ballad from 10 years ago. Regardless, the lyrics are swoon-worthy.
“Something“ by The Beatles – Every couple should have at least one Beatles song played at their wedding. This would fill that requirement.
“When I’m Sixty-Four“ by The Beatles – It is sweet and romantic, but it’s also incredibly unconventional. This one should be for the serious Beatles fan, and for a couple who is looking for first dance experience that’s more unique than romantic.
“You Send Me” by Sam Cooke – This is another mellow, romantic song that works well for the couple who doesn’t want to plan an elaborate first dance. It’s a short song, running at under three minutes.
