The National League West was well represented in 2012 as the San Francisco Giants beat the Detroit Tigers in the World Series. Can the Giants repeat? Only time will tell. Here are my predictions for the 2013 NL West.
Los Angeles Dodgers (91-71)
The Los Angeles Dodgers will win the National League West in 2013. The Dodgers are stacked with talent and look like a legitimate World Series contender this season. The Dodgers roster includes starting pitcher Zack Greinke, Carl Crawford, Matt Kemp, Clayton Kershaw, Adrian Gonzalez, and Hanley Ramirez. They finished 10 games over .500, but missed the playoffs as they were 8 games behind division winner San Francisco. The Dodgers have all of the talent they need to win the division, and should be able to hold off the Giants this season.
San Francisco Giants (89-73)
The 2012 World Series Champions come into the 2013 season with high hopes, but outplayed themselves last season and they haven’t improved. Closer Brian Wilson, who battled injuries for most of the last season, is a free agent. Sergio Romo will take over the closing duties, but the bullpen is taking a hit by not bringing Wilson back. The Giants should have a solid year with a great chance to make the playoffs via a wild card spot, but I do not expect them to win the division.
Arizona Diamondbacks (83-79)
The Arizona Diamondbacks seem to be treading water. After an 81-81 season in 2012, the Diamondbacks look like they will repeat their mediocrity after failing to make any big moves in the offseason. They have slightly improved their outfield with signing Cody Ross, but they failed to make a big splash to contend with the Giants or the Dodgers for the division lead.
Colorado Rockies (75-87)
The Colorado Rockies have been failing to perform up to their talent for the past several seasons. The Rockies only won 64 games in 2012, but have a young nucleus that should continue to improve. There is nothing in place to insist that they will be able to have a breakout season in 2013, but I do expect a much better season with around 75 wins.
San Diego Padres (74-88)
With another mediocre lineup and starting rotation, the San Diego Padres are bound to have another underwhelming season under .500. I am a big fan of many of their young talented players including shortstop Everth Cabrera, but they need to improve their pitching staff to keep up with the rest of their division.
