Writing for Wisegeek

For writers who takes the technical aspects of writing seriously, writing for Wisegeek may be a good place to seek work. The application process is simple and as long as you have two solid writing samples you stand a reasonable shot at employment. The pay per article is around 15 dollars per piece and there are literally hundreds of topics to choose from. Wisegeek also provides excellent feed back for writers from their editors, one of whom will be assigned to the writer throughout their freelancing tenure with the site.

What is Wisegeek?

Just as the name suggest, Wisegeek is a content site that provides information on almost every single topic imaginable: history, how to, tech, writing etc… However, unlike many similar sites on the Internet, Wisegeek provides no nonsense answers with little fluff in a highly edited and proficient manner.

Applying as an Article Writer

Article writers will want to spend some time thinking about their application to Wisegeek. They will need not only two writing samples of at least 300 words each but also a short resume/CV. Candidates should also have at least 1 excellent and highly polished article that has been previously published and a direct link to its location for Wisegeek to review.

Writing Samples

Your writing samples should be tightly composed and show proficiency in the subject that you are writing on. These samples should also reflect the abilities and areas of expertise alluded to in the resume and CV that will be attached to the application. Writers should look through the site to see the style in which the articles are composed and should try to display their ability to write in a similar style.

Resume and CV

Writers seeking employment with Wisegeek should take time to display what they can offer to the site that others cannot and should not think of a writing resume in the same sense as a typical job resume. Work experience outside of writing carries little bearing with those reviewing an application for a writing position.

The Editorial Process

Once accepted by Wisegeek, prospective writes will have to work on several articles with an editor who is assigned to them. Their editor will stay with the writer throughout all future article submissions. This process allows not only highly focused and proficient compositions but also a natural relationship between the writer and the editor which will significantly increase the writer’s abilities and the ease of the both the writing and editorial process over time.

Downsides

There are few failings with regards to Wisegeek; however, competition is fierce and the site isn’t always accepting applications.

If accepted, writers may choose from literally hundreds of articles but should be aware that many of the topics will require a good deal of research and technical ability.

Those seeking an opportunity should also be aware that the editors will hold little back when requesting a re-write. Potential contractors for the site will need a tough skin and should understand that writing is an ever expanding process that demands time, effort and the ability to use criticism for the benefit of the article and reader.
