Arched windows are desirable architectural features, just like arched doorways. While oddly shaped windows can seem like a challenge to decorate, it really isn’t as hard as it might seem. An arched window can be treated in a variety of ways, which actually allows you to be more creative in designing the room. In full disclosure, there is something you may have trouble with. It might be difficult to choose which window treatment idea you like the best!
Idea #1- Partial Coverage
An arched window provides the unique opportunity to cover only part of the window. Typically, the arch is so high that you only need to cover the bottom portion of the window when you need privacy. To do this, you simply hang a curtain rod right over the portion of the window where the straight, parallel sides end and the curve of the arch begins. This allows natural light to enter the room at all times and also leaves the decorative arch on display. The most common type of window treatment used for this is sheer curtain panels. However, you can use any type of curtain or drape that you like.
Idea #2- Flexible Curtain Rods
If you want to cover the entire window, you can purchase a flexible curtain rod. This type of rod is usually made from a polycarbonate plastic that can be bent to conform to many types of curved windows, including round and oval windows. A flexible rod can be cut to fit smaller windows or spliced together to cover larger windows. Mounting clips enable you to attach the rod on the inside of the window casing. Flexible curtain rods are perfect for sheer or light weight fabric curtains.
Idea #3- Shutters
Plantation shutters are an elegant way to treat an arched window. Shutters can be used on the bottom portion of the window only, leaving the arch exposed. Wood shutters are also designed to fit perfectly within the arch of the window, creating a unique, sunburst design. This looks especially stunning when light is shining through the wood slats.
Idea #4- Shades
You can filter the light coming through the arch in a window by adding a fabric shade. Fabric shades are designed for a perfect fit in an arched window. These shades are available in a variety of colors. The shade allows soft light to filter into the room while blocking out the intense heat.
Idea #5- Floor to Ceiling Drapes
Curtain rods installed at the top of the wall near the ceiling can hold extra-long drapes that go all the way to the floor. This type of window treatment works well in a formal dining or living room. The arched windows are completely hidden from view when the drapes are closed.
Idea #6- Swags
An arched window can be dressed up with gracefully draped swags that cover the top and sides of the window. Any type of fabric can be used for this purpose. The type of fabric you choose should be consistent with the style of the room.
As you can see, there are many creative options for decorating arched windows. You can look for more ideas by doing a search online using the keywords, “decorating ideas for arched windows.
