Windham Pilates & Wellness Hosts Breast Cancer Research Event

Windham Pilates & Wellness joins more than 100 pilates studios nationwide this October in raising funds for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The studio will donate funds raised at seven Pilates for Pink fitness classes to benefit this cause.

Several of the faculty in the studio have been deeply affected by the loss of family and friends from breast cancer. We need to raise as much awareness as possible. It is a cause worth fighting for” says Stephenie Secord, studio owner. We wanted to help increase awareness and to make a donation to an organization that can really make a difference in finding a cure for breast cancer. Pilates for Pink was the perfect fit.”

Pilates is a popular exercise method invented 70 years ago that focuses on improving strength and flexibility without building bulk. Legendary dancers George Balanchine and Martha Graham were some of the first people to use Pilates; current famous users include Tiger Woods, Madonna, and Gloria Estefan. Pilates classes range from exercises performed on a simple mat to routines performed on complex Pilates machines called the reformer, the cadillac, and the wunda chair.

The public is invited to participate in Pilates for Pink at Windham Pilates & Wellness by coming to any of seven different $10 Pilates classes, with all procedes being earmarked for the BCRF. Additional donations to the cause are welcomed and encouraged.

Pilates for Pink Classes at Windham Pilates & Wellness:

Wednesday, October 10th: 9:30am

Saturday, October 13th: 9:30am

Thursday, October18th: 6:30pm

Sunday, October 28th : 8:00am

Owner and instructor Stephenie Secord is also certified in the Pink Ribbon Program which is a post operative workout enhancing recovery for breast cancer survivors. The studio will be offering free Pink Ribbon classes in October for all breast cancer survivors.

Last year, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation raised and deployed $27 million for research initiatives to find a prevention and a cure for breast cancer. In 2007, BCRF is on target to raise that level to $34 million, in part due to innovative programs, like Pilates for Pink. In 2007, Charity Navigator gave BCRF a 4-star rating for the sixth time, with 85% of all funds raised going directly to directly to breast cancer awareness programs and research grants.

Windham Pilates has also partcipated in the Breast Cancer Walk, the town library Strawberry Festival, and Project Smile, as well as many other local fundraising initiatives.

Classes will be held at The Windham Village Green, 33 Indian Rock Road (route 111,) Windham, NH. For more information, contact: Heidi Weishaar at 603.234.4075
