What is the Best Weight Loss Program?

What is the best weight loss program for you? One that you will stick to, it’s just that simple. As a Certified fitness professional I’ve seen many people begin and quickly end their weight loss efforts. However, it wasn’t until I needed to lose weight myself (after gaining 25 pounds in college) that I finally understood the simple strategies that make weight loss programs work. Now that I’ve “been there and done that” I feel confident sharing the three strategies I’ve found to take the weight off, and keep it off. For good.

Strategy One: Ask Yourself – Does This Weight Loss Program Fit Into My Schedule?

When beginning a new program or when wondering what is the best weight loss program, most people do not realize the simplicity of weight loss. It comes down to two basic concepts: moving more and eating less. With this in mind, there’s vast array of weight loss programs from which to choose; yet they need not be a complicated as one may think.

Keeping weight loss efforts simple and within a framework that you can manage is the first in my three strategies for successful weight loss. If you need to be accountable, join a club. Yet, if you’d like to keep efforts simple, buy a spiral notebook and keep a food and exercise journal. For the next week, keep track of everything you put into your mouth and every move you make. Track your calories with one of the many simple calorie trackers online and find out how many calories you’ll need to lose weight. Next, simply look for ways to lose by moving more and eating less.

Strategy Two: Ask Yourself – Is This Weight Loss Program Too Focused On Dangerously Low Calorie Reduction?

If a weight loss program is based solely on calorie reduction, please proceed with caution. When I first lost weight through a commercial program, I ate precious little. Once the program was completed, I found myself nutrient deficient in many areas (vitamins B, D3 and magnesium to name a few). Keep an eye on programs that make big promises through deep calorie reduction. What’s important is balance: You need to sample from all of the food groups and eat balanced meals in effort to lose in proportion to your size and to stay healthy.

Strategy Three: Ask Yourself – How Can I Incorporate More Movement Into My Day?

If you are like most people and have a busy schedule, you will find it difficult to find time for exercise. This does not have to be the case. In fact, by thinking smarter, moving more could be the easiest thing for you. When I was losing weight, I found myself short on time for the gym. What I did was simply purchase a cheap-o pedometer from the local sporting goods store (I’ve seen them in the grocery store, as well). Each day I made it my aim to walk 5,000 steps. I did this day after day consistently and logged my success in my journal.

This netted great weight loss results. Moving more allowed me to eat more calories each day and went a long way toward my weight loss efforts. If the gym works for you, great. If not, try exercise videos, a treadmill or elliptical in your home or as previously stated using the ease of a quick, clip-on pedometer.

These three strategies are not an exhaustive list of ways you can make your weight loss efforts easier. They are simply easy tools you can use to simplify your weight loss efforts. When you ask yourself “What is the best weight loss program for me?” I think you will find your answer is the one that is simple, requires minimal planning and is the most fun.
