What is Laughing Gas?

What is Laughing Gas? What is it? A nitrous oxide, a gas which you can breathe in. It has no color but it has a sweet smell to it. It’s usually not used alone. It was discovered in 1772. It is used to numb, killing the pain. It induces a pleasurable feeling. After five minutes or so of breathing in the gas, it takes affect. You usually start to feel light-headedness and often makes you giggle. It can only be used for short periods of time because the lack of oxygen in pure nitrous oxide can lead to unconsciousness and even death. But it is safe to use for longer periods of time if mixed with oxygen. Together, it is 70% oxygen and 30% nitrous oxide. That is what’s available today at the dentists’ office. How is it administered? Though a mask hooked up to a machine that administers the gas with a flip of a switch. It is nearly impossible to overdose on this if administered in a controlled environment with someone who is professionally trained. Advantages of using nitrous oxide:

Happy gas works quickly. It reaches the brain in 20 seconds The depth of sedation can be altered from moment to moment There is no ” hang over effect” which means you can drive home It has very few side effects Disadvantages of using nitrous oxide: Some people will not achieve adequate sedation Rare occasions, people have had bad experiences but this is usually caused by over sedation Some people are unable to breathe through their noses, or they feel claustrophobic when something is put over their nose There aren’t any major contradictions except for emphysema and some exotic chest problems How safe is it for Children? It is safe for children when they are anxious during dental treatments and exams. It is non-addictive and children remain awake during the whole procedure.

If you have a fear of going to the dentist, try some of these relaxing techniques to help you through: Begin by using whatever helps you to relax, such as imagining your at the ocean on a bright sunny day, or in the mountains by the creek. Everyone is different so research and try different techniques until you find what works for you. You have to feel comfortable with your dentist. Talk to him. Remember, you are paying for his time so use it. In some phobias, it is mind over matter. So start talking yourself into going. Most of us wait until we start having pain before we go to the dentist. If we go for checkups regularly, maybe there won’t be a fear. Start taking your children between ages 3 and 4. When you feel they are able to comprehend what is happening and why. Most dentists would be glad to let your little one set in the big chair and maybe open their mouths so the dentist can look in. Hopefully you can prevent a phobia from starting.
