There is no finer crystal in the world than Waterford. And yes it is very collectable. For instance, my mother was given a Waterford Crystal Bud vase about 35 years ago. The person who gave it to her paid $10.00. Today a bud vase will cost you at least $125.00 and that is for the newer design. Can you imagine what the older one, which is not made any more, will go for?
Waterford Crystal Collectibles are hand cut and engraved lead crystal from Waterford, Ireland. It was first made in 1783.
Probably the most collectable of the Waterford line are the special edition pieces. They are in limited production and their value will increase rapidly. For instance, in 2005 they started the Waterford Crystal Collectibles Twelve Days of Christmas Collection with 2 wine flutes, and two bells, you can buy one or both, for the first two days of the song and this year will add on two more and so on until the set is complete in 2010. Those who complete the set will have something that will increase in value almost instantly, because they will not be made again. And if you happen to be able to add on the Waterford Crystal Collectibles Twelve Days of Christmas Punch Bowl, it will be even more valuable.
There is also the Waterford Crystal Times Square Collection. As you know, Waterford makes the ball that drops in Times Square on New Years Eve. Each year they change the theme of the ball and make collectibles with that pattern. This years pattern is Hope For Peace. And it will only be made this year. Next years will be different. If you happen to get one item from each year, well the value will be almost unlimited.
The regular line is collectable also, especially the retired patterns, patterns that are no longer made for general sale. You can have them made to order, to replace a broken one for instance. so if you have inherited any, hang onto it. You can choose from a wide variety of glasses, vases, plates, bowels and decanters and go all the way up to a chandelier which will set you back a cool $13,000. They even have a collection for bridesmaids gifts. That would be so special. And a line of fine pens.
There is an excellent book on Waterford Crystal and it would be a good idea to try and get a copy. The more you know, the more informed you are, the better.
Waterford: A Celebration of Fine Crystal by Peter Costelloe, Derrik Mercer published by Pavilion Books, Limited in 2003. It may be hard to find new. You may have to contact the publisher or look in the library to get a copy.
Waterford Crystal also makes other special pieces like the Times Square Ball, and just like they did with the Times Square Collection, they make special pieces for the public. Take a look at what they have done in the past, and you will see what I mean.
Waterford Crystal Stanley Cup Trophy
When Tampa Bay won the Stanley Cup in 2004, they received a Waterford Crystal Trophy and the fans could order special edition Waterford Crystal Hockey Pucks to commemorate the win.
World Series Trophy
In 2003 when the Florida Marlins won the World Series, they received Waterford Crystal Trophy and fans could buy commemorative Waterford Crystal baseballs. These were both extremely limited editions and their value has already skyrocketed. If you ever see an offer like this again, and it will be publicized widely if it is, try to be the first on line. You will not regret it one little bit.
