Val’s Burgers, Hayward, Ca

If you are looking for a good and consistent charbroiled burger, Val’s Burgers is your spot at 2115 Kelly Street in Hayward, Ca. Val’s has been in business since the 1950’s and is now a historic landmark.

The parking lot is very small and, honestly, frustrating. It is one lane in and one lane out, which makes it easy to get “pinned” in temporarily. Unless you are visiting at non-peak hours, bring your parking karma with you. Street parking is pretty much nonexistent and not exactly recommended. There is a liquor store across the street that has a decent size parking lot and you can walk cross the street to Val’s.

Hours of operation: Tuesday through Saturday from 6:30 am to 10:00 pm. Closed on Sunday and Monday.

The diner is small with around two dozen tables and some “bar” seating. It’s not exactly modern but this is to be expected as the feel is a 50’s diner.

Condiments, such as pickles and relish, are left on the table in Tupperware. All of your normal condiments, such as ketchup, are also on the table.

Val’s is a bit pricey and be prepared with cash because they don’t accept anything else. Two Mama Burgers, an order of fries, a chocolate shake and extra relish will cost you $23.65, including tax.

A Mama Burger with cheese is a wonderful order choice. The size will leave you full; portions leave nothing to be desired. I always add some salt and pepper to my patty. The burgers are cooked to your preference. The patty and all of the produce are quality and fresh. The buns, however, are very cheap. You should plan to eat your burger quickly because once this cheap bun gets soggy, it’s over.

The sweet relish that they serve is a must have. I add it to my burger and, together, so delicious!

The steak fries are very good but they are greasy. It is highly recommended that you blot some grease off first. Fry portions are large and one order is more than enough for two people.

Shakes and sundaes are made with the delicious Berkeley Farms ice cream. My favorite is a chocolate shake. They also make a hot fudge sundae that will leave your taste buds extremely happy.

Val’s is always busy and almost always packed. The service is not slow, but it takes some time because they are always so busy. I generally order to go and will do so by calling in my order.

Bottom line: Recommended.
