Unique Baby Gift – Painted Baby Onesie

Oftentimes, giving a baby gift for the first child of the family isn’t a hard to find item. But when you are looking for baby number three or four, it does become a bit more difficult and you may be wondering if you should even bother. All births are special and if you want to acknowledge this new life with a gift, you may consider making a gift. To create a unique one of a kind baby gift for a new baby involve the older siblings in the creation. Mom will be so impressed and this will be one special gift.

What you will need:

Fabric paint (non-toxic)
Scrap piece of cardboard
Paper with a circle drawn on it
Paper plate
Sponge brush
Baby onesie
Wet paper towels for clean up
For this design, we will be creating a flower.

To prepare, place the cardboard and drawn circle together inside the onesie, between the front and back layers of fabric. This is your template for the design as well as protection from the paint bleeding through to the backside of the fabric. Each child will be assigned one color and you will work with each child, one at a time. Dipping the child’s fingers into the paint, direct them to make a pulled finger print along the circle shape pulling their fingers into the circular shape. Continue this process until the entire circle is filled with one round of fingerprints. These are the outer petals of the flower. The next child will do the same thing with a new color and inside the first ring of fingerprints, creating another layer of petals and depth to the image. The smallest child will make dotted fingerprints in the center of the circle creating the center of the flower. For a variation, the center of the flower could be created from sewn on buttons if you so desire a different look.

If you would like, you can use the new baby’s handprints in green to be the leaves on the flower. Using fabric paint, you can draw a stem or use a permanent marker to draw in a stem.
