TV Commercial Audition Tips – Improvisation

As a young actor, I had an overwhelming desire to work in television commercials. Not only do these productions offer their actors regular exposure to the general public, but the pay for TV commercials is quite nice. If you are interested in working in TV commercials, then you must be a well-versed improvisational actor as many TV commercial auditions require an actor to not only recite lines, but also improvise a variety of movements.

Improvisation for TV commercial actors is vital for the success of the actor as the majority of TV commercial acting is done through facial reactions. To enhance your chances of booking a commercial gig.

TV Commercial Auditions

Auditions for TV commercials are quite different than a typical TV sitcom or film audition. Typically, TV commercial casting directors request to see actors specifically based on their look. Ad agencies and other organizations that are in charge of creating commercials look for actors who have a specific look as their look is a direct representation of their product, which makes sense when you realize that the majority of TV commercial actors are quite good looking.

TV commercial auditions are typically crowded, as a casting director typically sees around 50 to 100 actors for a single role. When you arrive at the audition, you will likely be handed a short piece of dialogue (if there is any speaking in the commercial) and then requested to improvise your movements.

Strong improvisational skills are vital for the success of a TV commercial audition as you must be able to improvise the requested reaction or movement the first time. Not only must you do the movement correctly on the first try, but you must also showcase your own personality and flare that sets you apart from the multitude of actors the C.D. will see.

Audition Tips

The most important tip an actor auditioning for a TV commercial can follow is to be original and unique. Tap into your own personality and utilize your individualistic strengths as an improvisational actor to set yourself apart from the other actors.
