What is now one of the country’s most distinguished resorts starting out as a vision on a remote island 80 years ago. The founder of Sea Island Company was Hoard Coffin the automotive pioneer who launched the
Hudson Motor Company. Coffin purchased tracts of land on St. Simons Island and a sliver of land now known as Sea Island. The golf course, designed by Walter Travis, opened in 1927 and quickly became popular with golfers. Coffin dreamed of building a large scale hotel, but the architect suggested a comfortable overnight inn to test the appeal of the remote island. The Cloister Inn opened in 1928 and had a grand opening that was attended by dignitaries, notably President Calvin Coolidge.
In 2006 The Cloister at Sea Island experienced a renaissance. Now the resort is a grand hotel with exceptional accommodations and services.
