Top Prom Themes 2011

No longer is prom just a dance, this day has become a rite of passage for high school juniors and seniors. The days of ordinary settings and basic decorations have been replaced with elaborate prom themes. Is your teen on a committee to plan prom and has no clue what to do to be original? Listed are the top five prom themes for 2011.

Arabian Nights

Prom themes geared toward Arabian nights will be the most fun to recreate. The setting could be a sub-Saharan desert oasis. Palm trees and watering basins mixed in with colors of olive and cream will bring the décor to life. This is not the time to think traditional. Girls should dress with colorful gowns where the accessories are the centerpieces. Whether it be hair pieces of additions to the dress, the accessory make the ensemble. Their dates should complement them by adding contrasting colors. Their tuxedos should have a secondary color on their lapel.

Midnight in Paris

What is a five letter word for love? Paris. Midnight in Paris is a timeless prom theme. The setting is perfect for a backdrop of the Eiffel Tower with Debussy playing in the background. Color schemes should consist of smoky grays and twinkling stars. The girls’ dresses should be reminiscent of Ingrid Berman in Casablanca. Clean lines and nothing which represents a pageant. Stay away from flashy colors as well. Boys should bring back the classic white tuxedo which had Humphrey Bogart stand out as a renaissance man. The music will be a mixture of popular music, to keep the kids engaged, and standard big band.

Old Hollywood

If you are looking for prom themes which exude class and sophistication, the perfect choice is old Hollywood. Actors and actresses alike showed all of us about how to dress. Boys tuxedo choices will be double breasted without tails. Classic black with a traditional black neck tie or bowtie finishes off the ensemble. Girls dresses will be reminiscent of Rita Hayworth. Dresses will be “A” shaped and not flowing.

Decorations could be recreated to mirror an awards red carpet. Have a velvet rope with picture taken directly off to the side. When thinking old Hollywood for prom themes, do generate extreme color breaks. Keep color to the same family.

Summer Nights

Having a summer nights prom theme will showcase color more than décor. You will decorate with vibrant shades of yellow and baby blue. Be careful not to include colors geared toward fall. You will not want to incorporate darker shades unless they are complimentary to your main color. The prom theme must consist of enormous flower arrangements. Lily’s, tulips, daises are good choices to include in the arrangements. Do not to create an outdoor theme similar to a camp site. Think of the open field in the beginning of New Moon, not the softball scene from Twilight. The difference is night and day.

Fairytale

This particular prom theme can be tricky. When selecting a fairytale theme, one shouldn’t turn this into a Halloween costume party, but more of an enchanted theme. Dresses should be flowing and grandiose. Whites and greens will dominate the color schemes. All colors should be very pale and not striking. The tuxedo selection will include the matching colors on the cumber bun and lapels. The setting should be abstract and not in accordance with tradition. Consider having starbursts and shimmering lights. Don’t think psychedelic but more on the lines of abstract.

As the school year starts, prom season will be right around the corner. Plan your prom themes now to ensure originality. As a rite of passage, you want your teen to have the most enjoyable prom ever.
