Top 10 Songs by Poco

Poco is America’s first country rock band, and after 40 years they are still going strong. The band started with Buffalo Springfield disbanded and Richie Furay and Jim Messina were looking to form another band. They added versatile musician Rusty Young and Poco was born. Former members of Poco included the likes of Randy Meisner and Timothy B. Schmit who later went on to fame and fortune with The Eagles. Poco charted many Top 20 and 40 hits over the years, but are best known as an innovative and hard working band. Current members include Young, Paul Cotton, Jack Sundrud, and George Lawrence.

Let’s take a look at some of the best songs from the original country rock band.

Heart of the Night (1979) – Maybe Poco’s most popular and played song, but it might not be their best. It’s off the Legend album and reached #5 on the charts. Paul Cotton sings lead on this hit that Poco sings to close out every concert performance. If you’ve been to New Orleans, this song will bring back memories.

Barbados – One of my favorite Poco songs and another Paul Cotton sung classic. Makes you feel like you are overlooking the ocean off the coast of Barbados. “I been sailing on this raging sea
The higher the venture The better I’ll be…Barbados”

Pickin’ Up the Pieces (1971) – Poco’s first song, it was written by Richie Furay. It was written to symbolize the breakup of Buffalo Springfield and the forming of Poco. This song has attitude and staying power, just like Poco.

Spellbound (1978) – A Rusty Young song. It’s relaxing and eerie all at the same time. Great lyrics and a different tone from other Poco songs. They don’t play this song enough in concert.

Rose of Cimarron (1976) – The title track from Poco’s 12th album. One of their best songs, only Poco could sing this song right.

Call it Love (1989) – One of Poco’s highest charting singles it reached #2 on just about every Billboard chart. Rusty Young loves to tell people this song got Poco on MTV, and it did. Everybody knows and loves this song, but they don’t realize Poco sings it.

Under the Gun (1980) – Poco loves to start their concerts with this song. It’s fast paced and is a catchy tune. It reached the top 50 on the U.S. charts. It’s from the album “Under the Gun”.

Keep on Tryin’ (1975) – Another one of the great Poco songs. This is Richie Furay and Timothy B. Schmit coming through with what I call a feel good song. It was a top 50 hit in the U.S.

Midnight Rain (1980) – A great melody and it’s classic Rusty Young. It’s of the “Under the Gun” album. This should’ve been a bigger hit than it was.

Crazy Love (1979) – Off the “Legend” album this soft rock favorite went to #1 on the adult contemporary charts. Rusty Young is perfect singing this one. Still gets air play today.

All great selections from Poco.
