Top 10 Single Season Home Run Records

You have heard about Barry Bonds and his great 2001 season where he broke the single season home run record but many other players have also recorded outstanding years to rival his feat. Here is a list of the top 10 single season home run records of all time in Major League Baseball.

1. Barry Bonds- Bonds is the most prolific home run hitter of all time and has had a cloud shadowing his accomplishments since being involved in the steroid controversy. Bonds saw his stats explode as he got older and finished with 73 single season home runs during the 2001 MLB season.

2. Mark Mcgwire- Mcgwire is a lot like Bonds and admitted guilt when it came to his own steroid abuse. Mcgwire will not make the Hall of Fame due to the controversy and had some of the best home run seasons of all time. Mcgwire had 70 home runs during the 1998 MLB season.

3. Sammy Sosa- Sosa had his best home run season during 1998 at the age of 29. Sosa had a great run versus Mcgwire for the top spot and finished the season with 66 home runs. Sosa is still trying to make a comeback and may eventually make the MLB Hall of Fame.

4. Mark Mcgwire- Mcgwire makes the list again as he had another fabulous season one year after his run in 1998. Mcgwire finished the 1999 season with 65 home runs at the age of 35.

5. Sammy Sosa- Sosa makes his second appearance of 3 on the top 10 list. During the 2001 season Sosa was spectacular finishing with 64 home runs at the age of 32.

6. Sammy Sosa- Sosa makes his last appearance on the list with a great season in 1999. Sosa edged Roger Maris with 63 home runs at the age of 30 to assume sole possession of the sixth spot on the list.

7. Roger Maris- Maris held the home run record all to himself from 1961 to 1998 until he was unseated by Mark Mcgwire and Sammy Sosa that season. Maris had an impressive season before the steroid era and will always be remembered for it. Maris held the record at 61 until he eventually lost it.

8. Babe Ruth- Ruth was a spectacular home run hitter in his day. Ruth held the home run record from 1927 to 1961 and is in the MLB Hall of Fame. Ruth was 32 when he impressed with 60 home runs during the 1927 season.

9. Babe Ruth- Ruth again makes the top 10 with 59 home runs during the 1921 Major League Baseball season. Ruth was only 26 during his initial home run record.

10. The 10^th position is a 4 way tie involving Jimmie Foxx, Hank Greenburg, Ryan Howard, and Mark Mcgwire. Foxx had his historic season during 1932 when he hit 58 home runs. Greenburg had the same total at the age of 27 during the 1938 season. Ryan Howard had his 58 during the 2006 season and also has a spot in the top 10. Last off is Mark Mcgwire who had 58 home runs during the 1997 MLB season at the age of 33.
