The Bordeaux region of France is traditionally known for its red wines: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and the like. However, there are plenty of Bordeaux white wines that are perfectly palatable and excellent either for collectors or for casual drinkers.
If you are looking for everyday white Bordeaux, you are probably hoping to spend less than $35, which is challenging. This is especially true if you favor dry whites because, despite their popularity, there simply aren’t that many vines left.
1- 1998-2002 Blanc de Lynch-Bages
From the Pauillac sub-region, this French wine is more expensive in later years, but if you can find it from the late nineties or early 2000s, you might spend less than $30. Later vintages, such as the 2006, will cost considerably more. Try it with lean pork, beef or lamb.
2- 2005 Clos Floridene
This French wine is from the Graves sub-region and boasts a top-notch bargain at $19.99 per bottle. It is smooth with hints of grapefruit and honey, and will age well over the next six years or so. It goes well with strawberries and chocolate, or with pasta.
3- 2005 Chantegrive
Another Graves offering, the 2005 Chantegrive is a very palatable Bordeaux white with a sweet taste that makes it an excellent dessert suggestion. It is darker than some of the other affordable wines on this list, and produces a long finish. Serve it alongside chocolate or cold desserts.
4- 1998 Couhins-Lurton Blanc
If you are looking for an older vintage in Bordeaux whites, this is an excellent choice. Like many of the affordable wines on this list, it is highly acidic but with a balanced flavor that includes new wood and grapefruit. Best of all, it will set you back only $20 or so.
5- 2005 Château Haut-Bergey
From Pessac Leognan, this white Bordeaux is easy on the palate and the wallet. For $29.99, you get a slow, deep, rich taste with aromas of peach and herb.
6- 2005 La Tour Martillac
Some of the best white Bordeaux wine is sweet but with a bite of spice. This is true for the 2005 La Tour Martillac, which costs only $19.99 a bottle and provides a rich, opulent French wine blend.
7- 2005 Le Bonnat
Another white Bordeaux from the Graves sub-region is Le Bonnat, which costs around $18 per bottle, and pairs wonderfully with salmon. It is light, crisp and highly drinkable.
8- 2002 Château Carbonnieux Blanc
For under $30, enjoy another affordable wine from the Bordeaux sub-region of St. Julien. Château Carbonnieux Blanc is crisp and acidic with a long finish, and goes well with pasta dishes in white sauce.
9- 2004 Les Arums de Lagrange
Another popular St. Julien white Bordeaux is Les Arums de Lagrange, which costs around $35 and makes an excellent accompaniment to pork and lamb. It’s fancy enough to serve at a corporate dinner party but sufficiently relaxed to drink over a meal with family.
10- Château Villa Bel-Air
If you are looking for classic Bordeaux whites from Graves, look no further than the Château Villa Bel-Air. Light and crisp and full-bodied with a long finish, this French wine goes well with tilapia, orange roughy and other fish.
