The Wonders of Flax Pond in Lynn, Massachusetts

If you are visiting Lynn, Massachusetts and you are looking for a great park to take the family, then you should visit Flax pond. Flax pond sits in a residential area of Lynn. The pond is surrounded by nice houses. A park sits before the pond and has swings, slides, and a play area for children.

Flax pond is a hot spot in Lynn, Massachusetts for fishing. It is not uncommon to see a father and his children fishing in the early summer mornings, or even two older men conversing against the day’s light. The pond is also a hot spot for mallard ducks, swans, white geese and Canada geese. Children will take delight in seeing these flocks of birds trample all over the pond. Children might even get to see a mother duck and her ducklings proceed in orderly fashion around the pond. Come during the right time of the year and you might get to see the pond full of lily pads!!! Children usually grab sticks and see if they can push a lily pad over for further examination. If you would like to get a bit closer to the water, you can walk over to the edge and peer in at the rocks, and seashells.

There are multiple benches for individuals to sit down on and enjoy lunch. The view of the water and geese is very nice to peer at while eating lunch. There is also a path that leads to a tennis and basket ball court; this is where the older children tend to hang.

Even with all of its beauty there are a few things to watch out for at the pond. Many people tend to feed the geese (even though it is prohibited.) Because of this, the geese have become more secure around people and if they see people eating will slowly ease their way over to them. Don’t be surprised to look up while eating and the next moment find your self surrounded by geese. The Canada geese are pretty good at leaving people alone if them shoo them away. However, the white geese are very aggressive and territorial, so it’s best to stay away from them.

Since there is a good size population of Canada geese there on the pond, there is a good size amount of bird droppings on the grass, which is a big nuisance since children tend to run and play without looking where they are stepping. If you have a weak stomach, the bird droppings here at the park might make you lose your appetite. So, you might want to eat lunch some place else before you come to the pond or to eat lunch after you leave the pond. Flax Pond is conveniently located 10 minutes (driving) and 15 minutes (walking) away from many restaurants such as Wendy’s, McDonalds, Burger King, and Papa Gino’s.

If you would really like to stay at the park, with patience you just might find a clear spot to eat your lunch. This truly is a lovely park, but the geese and their droppings can get a bit overwhelming, if you are not used to their presence.
