The Top Children’s Museums in Greater Atlanta

Whether you are visiting Atlanta, or looking for something interesting to do with your child, the Children’s museums of Greater Atlanta are wonderful places to bring your children. My favorite children’s museums in Greater Atlanta include are Imagine It! located across the street from Centennial Park. The Center of Puppetry Arts, also in Atlanta, and right around the corner from me, the Children’s Arts Museum. As a homeschooling family, we have had the privilege to visit many of Atlanta’s museums.

Here are our top picks:

Childrens Museum for Kids age 2-8

Imagine It! The Children’s Museum of Atlanta at 275 Centennial Olympic Park Drive NW in Atlanta, GA was designed to support the classroom. The mission of the museum is to “create environments and activities where young children experience the power of imagination and the pure delight of learning with each other and with grown-ups.” Based on the theory of multiple intelligences, Imagine It! Children’s Museum had numerous activities that wills stimulate all of your children’s senses. The environment is a mix of industrial and fantasy that will stimulate the child’s imagination while creating a learning environment.

The price for children and adults over the age of three is $11.00, and children under three are free. You should purchase your tickets in advance, before arriving due to high traffic volume. In addition, the museum is designed for children ages 2-8, and I would not recommend it for a child over 10 years old as they will be too large for some of the attractions and may find others uninteresting.

Shows for Children and Adults

The Center for Puppetry Arts, at 1404 Spring St NW Atlanta, is one of the largest puppet centers in the United States. It houses a museum, a gallery, two theatres, workspaces, and the obligatory gift shop. If you like theatre shows and museums, you will love this place. The Center has two types of shows. There is a daytime show geared toward children and adult performances, wine included. I did not get a chance to view the evening show, but if it is half as good as the daytime show, then it is excellent!

For $14.00 for daytime shows, and $18-$22 for evening, adult shows, your visit to The Center for Puppetry Arts is well worth the cost. While you are there, do not forget to visit the museums, which include interactive exhibits and traveling exhibits.

Let the children relax and create art of thier own

The Children’s Arts Museum at 6400 Sugarloaf Pkwy Ste 300, Duluth, in Gwinnett County is a 40-minute drive NE of Atlanta. The Children’s Arts Museum is a part of Hudgens Center for the Arts and is a great place for children to relax around art and really enjoy it. The center is simple yet complete and exhibits include activities that truly engage the children. One exhibit included a scavenger hunts forcing children to take a closer look and discuss the work. The entire center is interactive. There is a small play theatre, a painting room with canvases affixed to the wall and paper to take home. There is also a foot piano and other musical instruments.

The Children’s Art Museum is often busy during the mornings with schoolchildren on field trips. I prefer to go from 1-5 pm on during the week (after lunch) when my homeschooled children and I can feel like we have the place to ourselves. The cost for entry is $5.00 per person. Parents can choose to sign their children up for art classes in the evenings and weekends. There are classes for adults during the day.
