The Mothman Prophecies: Fact or Fiction?

Many ideas and concepts tend to fall outside of the mainstream of logical thinking and therefore the mainstream of many people in the world. The Mothman Prophecies happen to fall within that category; however, it is not something easily dismissed by those who take an honest approach to research revolving the incidents that occurred in the mid to late-1960s in and around Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Nor is it something taken lightly by those who lived in and around the area of the Chernobyl Disaster, which is the worst nuclear disaster in the world since the invention of nuclear power as a new clean energy source. In both cases, there were townspeople who reported first-hand, eyewitness reports of seeing visions of what the media terms as The Mothman or The Mothman Prophecies given the fact that this creature, entity, deity, or other supernatural being foretold of such events about to take place.

The Mothman came to residents of both areas as well as areas around the world prior to disastrous and deadly events. Documentation states that even outside of the Silver Bridge incident and the Chernobyl Disaster that Mothman portrayed a pivotal role in the impending disaster of these areas. History shows cave wall paintings of a creature similar to the ones drawn of Mothman during current decades. Is this a case of mass hysteria, copycat reports, or is there more do it? If so, how it is that tribes separated from modern civilization and sheer time itself, share the same leading events and drawings? How is it that so many different individuals witnessed the same creature but also could describe right down to minute details the actions of this creature? How is it that this creature spoke to these witnesses warning them of the impending doom if they were to remain in the area? The answer is that we have no real answers other than eyewitness accounts of upstanding citizens, several of whom refused to share their stories until finding themselves on their deathbeds.

While the book written by John Keel claims the culprit to be of an otherworldly alien encounter, it is difficult to put much faith in the thoughts of such ramblings since scientists who do not doubt that we are not alone in the universe. Yet astrophysicists and scientists do agree it would be highly improbable for mere Earthlings to make contact. The vast nature of the universe and the proof that the universe is expanding making it more difficult for contact to occur within the current lifetime; however, few seem willing to take into account that the Mothman along with other unexplained phenomenon could possibly exist here on our planet without the need to travel light years to get here.

If we take into consideration that an estimated two-thirds of the population believe in an benevolent divine being, how far of a stretch is it to believe that perhaps there is more available on our planet than a divine presence known as God, Allah, and other names the benevolent beings of various religions? Could there be more beings here?

Explanations of how a mother sitting on the opposite side of a city, state, or even country can know the precise time of injury or death of their child are unexplainable. How does an adult child know the moment their parent expires despite never having received a phone call, email, or other correspondence to alert them to the fact this transpired? How is it possible? Some people shake these feelings off while many others toss this up to faith. It is the same when a family member receives what they know is a visit from the dearly departed. Often stories of how a family member or loved one returns to let their closest friends, family, and other loved ones know they are okay occur all the time. Are these people crazy? They certainly are not crazy although many psychologist and psychiatrist will make out as if this is nothing more than an active imagination and a coping mechanism of the mind. If we were to delve deeper into this subject we would learn that there are things the departed share with their living loved ones that the departed could never know.

Take this one step further… how is it that a person who dies in the midst of surgery or during a cardiac arrest where the body dies yet returns through the assistance of modern medicine. How can these people return only to tell doctors, other medical staff, friends, and family exactly what was happening in the room despite the fact the body was dead and the medical equipment proves the fact. It is unexplainable yet it happens in hospitals across the world. If this occurs all over the world, it is difficult to dismiss it as simple fantasy. There has to be some shred of truth behind the event.

The Mothman Prophecies movie that includes actor Richard Gere comes off as somewhat of a horror flick with many Hollywood aspects; however, if one follows the true stories of the citizens of Point Pleasant, West Virginia prior to the Silver Bridge Incident, one has to take pause concerning the Mothman sightings. The sightings began almost a year prior to the Silver Bridge Disaster. Many of the reports were prophetic in nature warning people there was to be an accident on the Ohio River though it is this writer’s understanding there was never any direct correlation between the bridge incident nor was there any correlation between anything else other than disaster on the Ohio River. Who is to say that perhaps Nostradamus did not receive his information in such a similar manner? Nostradamus is one of the most renowned men of his time considering many of his prophecies have come to pass and continue to do so even today although there are some who claim it is possible that if one waits long enough any prophecy will present itself by virtue of time. How then does it occur with such clarity and precision to details? There are no answers.

The odd part of all of this regarding Mothman is the manner in which the disturbances began and more so how they ended. With exception of one final sighting, the Mothman prophecies ended with the Silver Bridge destruction. The same holds true with the Chernobyl Incident. One has to take into consideration that the possibility exists that the population living in and around both catastrophic areas held within it a certain population that were more sensitive to the warnings of this being regardless of where, when, or how he or it came to be in the area.

If we as a society are to dismiss the possibility, not the likelihood but the possibility of Mothman then we as a society must dismiss the possibility of religious deities such as God, Allah, angels, and guardians. We might as well dismiss the possibility of the incarnation of the Dalai Lama, Catholic Saints, and other figures upon which we base the sole existence upon faith.

Contrary to popular belief, as a society we cannot base everything that occurs solely with the hands of science. There are things science simply cannot explain and therefore since science cannot explain it, we have to take a leap of faith. This is not to say that science does not have a place in our world. It is not to say that religion and belief in the beyond has no place in our world either. It is possible that the two can co-exist as long as each person can accept the fact that there are things that are not explainable while at the same time there are things explainable by science.

A close friend made an observation that stuck with me. This person said that the new testament of the bible proclaims that Jesus will someday return. If this deity returns, what are the chances that society as a whole will not commit this person without so much as a second thought since our society tends to put those who have different views into psychiatric hospitals and leave them there until the person openly admits that no such occurrence is possible? We as a society search for extra-terrestrial life yet what does anyone believe will happen if one day a space ship not of this world happens to land on the very soil of the planet Earth. If such a species were to land on the planet, the military would whisk this being off to some military base in secrecy while lying to the public proclaiming a “weather balloon,” or a “deranged individual,” made false claims. Scientists of the poor country this being landed upon would commence to poke, prod, and later perform hideous experiments on the poor creature in secret while the governments of the world lied to the public.

The majority of the population of this world fear what they do not understand or cannot comprehend. Chances of some alien race landing on this planet is remote but anyone with half a brain and the willingness to think for oneself has to ask the hard question, “What if?” What if Mothman is a true entity of some nature be it from our dimension or time or perhaps from an alternate dimension or time? What if the second coming so many believes will occur does happen? Will we treat these entities with such righteous indignation that nobody takes a moment to consider the possibility that perhaps this is the real deal and we are merely too afraid to acknowledge there is more to life, death, and our existence to believe something else is possible?

Do not take my word on the Mothman Prophecies or the possibility this really occurred. Do your own research. Many websites have a plethora of information surrounding the Mothman, the Point Pleasant ordeal, and that of Chernobyl, and the history of Mothman that spans deeper and further back in history than our time.

Check into websites such as the following:

http://www.mothman.us/
http://mothman.41665.com/victims.html
http://www.wvculture.org/history/wvhs1504.html

Do your own research and reach your own conclusions; however, be sure to make certain you do not cloud your judgment with prejudices and preconceived notions. Take the body of work and dissect it, tear it apart, put it back together again, and then ask questions if you must. The answers may not be out there right now but who is to say that someday the answers might reveal themselves. Point Pleasant residents had true fear flowing through their veins during the year preceding the Silver Bridge Incident as did those who lived to tell the stories about Mothman during and following the Chernobyl Disaster. The stories match too well and came from so many unrelated sources it would be impossible to connect the dots as a conspiracy theory. Once evidence becomes known, imagine what would happen if a set number of people within your community, all upstanding citizens were to begin to witness such incidents. How would you as a member of that community dismiss your neighbors whom you spent a lifetime getting to know by attending birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, community parties, and other social functions? How would you feel if you witnessed such an event and yet everyone outside of your community and perhaps some within it labeled you as a nutcase for believing? Perhaps you would not be so quick to judge someone else if such an event plagued your community.
