The Curiously Curly German Rex Cat

Their history is a bit murky, and there are several different recorded accounts on the development of the breed. One of the accounts says that the line was discovered when a black cat entered the gardens of a hospital in East Berlin after the Second World War.

Another story about the discovery of these cats is it was first found at the residence of Dr. Scheuer-Karpin in 1946. However, it was also said that the breed was developed from stray cats, which were adopted in 1951.

In the 1970’s, the breeding of the Rex started to decline. However, there are now cat enthusiasts in Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, Holland, and Russia, who continue to produce the curly feline in order to increase its numbers and popularity.

Physical Traits

The German Rex cat is a medium-sized breed with a muscular body and slender legs. It has a strong chest and a straight back, starting from the shoulders up to its croup. Because of its build, it is more physically similar to the European Shorthairs cat than to the Cornish Rex.

The tail of these curiously beautiful cats is fairly long, and has a round tapering end. It has thick fur, which is thickest at its base. Another unique trait is its long toes on its rounded paws.

These cats have large ears and a round head with full cheeks. Its silky coat, although short, has a tendency to become wavy or curly. Interestingly, its whiskers have a tendency to curl, too. Despite its wavy coat, this cat is easy to groom.

Its eyes are wide open and widely spaced. The color of the eyes usually corresponds with the color of its coat.

Although its features are somewhat similar to that of the Cornish Rex , the German variety has a heavier build with a longer and spikier coat.

Unusual Features

Some Rexes have features that differ from most of the cats under this breed. Unusual features that may be found include small ears, a long or pointed head, a short tail (or a hairless tail), a coat that is too short (or not curly enough), or hairless spots.

Behavior

The German Rex is an intelligent and playful breed . It is friendly and bonds quickly with its owner. Unlike other cat breeds, it is very patient and non-temperamental. It can also bond well with other cat species. Like most cats, these lovable felines also enjoy a lot of attention. It is a highly communicative cat that will meow often for attention or food.

As with any cat, this breed should be cared for and loved to the best of a cat owner’s ability, including regular visits to the veterinarian or monitoring the house for potential hazards and toxic substances. Give your curly friend stimulating and safe cat toys with the occasional catnip stuffed inside to keep them from getting bored and withdrawn, and offer your attention whenever possible to reward them for their purr-fect kitty love.
