The Best Paranormal TV Shows

After the huge success of the TV show “The X Files”, some new paranormal fiction and non fiction shows are competing in Primetime. Our taste for the scientific fantasy, ghost hunting or the world of the unknown can be satisfied with multiple TV offers.

We were always attracted by the shows about Sci-fiction or paranormal issues. My generation grew up watching “The Twilight Zone”, and the Enterprise’s crew from “Star Trek”, became part of our families. But these days we can watch in the same week several offers of TV shows that are about horror, paranormal investigation or ghosts. New technology makes these shows spectacular and much scarier. Here there are some of the new paranormal TV shows that we can watch right now:

One of my favorite paranormal TV shows is “Supernatural”. This show is about two brothers who hunt supernatural evil beings, and try to deal with a life in the road, a sad childhood and a horrific destiny. The characters are fun and engaging, the dialogues crisp and the cases entertaining. Some episodes are pretty scary, with nice special effects and a tasteful amount of gore. The sense of humor makes the horror and the gore very easy to watch, and the rithym is fast.

The ghost Whisperer” is a much lighter show, without the sharpness of “Supernatural”, and it is more directed to an emotional point of view of the ghost hunting. Jennifer Love Hewitt is Melinda Gordon, a young lady who can see ghosts. They communicate with her and she helps them to cross over to Heaven. The best part of the show is the special effects, some of the ghosts are scary, and sometimes Melinda gets herself involved in horrific situations. But the show has a tendency of repeating itself, and the emotional side of the story gets too heavy.

“Ghost Hunters” is a non fiction show, in the Sci-Fi channel. It is about a group of ghost hunters, “Taps” that visits hunted places to investigate and discover if the hunting is real or not. They are equipped with the last technology, and they use it to try to find ghosts. The show has some scary moments, and some of the hunted places are horrific. But I always feel that they never really prove anything definitely, we never see the actual ghosts, and the results are always in the air.

“Paranormal State” in A&T; is a different kind of show. It is a docudrama, a non fiction show with a dramatic treatment of the stories and the characters. The main character is Ryan Buell, who leads the Penn State Paranormal Research Society, a student led college group who investigates paranormal activities. They try to help people who are hunted by spirits or stalked by ghosts. The failure of find anything conclusive gives credibility to the show, but sometimes it is frustrating.

“True Blood”, in HBO is based in the famous Charlaine Harris’ books. It is the story of Sookie Stackhouse, a Louisiana telepathic waitress who gets involved in the world of the supernatural. True Blood is the brand of a synthetic blood produce by the Japanese to feed vampires, whose existence is now known by the world. The show is great, but the books are much better, because they are sexier and much more fun.

“Fringe” is a new paranormal show, about a FBI agent who starts working with a crazy scientist and his son trying to resolve strange and bizarre cases. The novelty of the show is that they use alternative science in their fight against evil. It is a fun show, but it may go more in the path of “The X-files” and sci-fi than in the horror or paranormal area.
