The Annual Spooky Walk in Long Island, Center Moriches

I’m the Halloween fanatic, if there is anything in my local hometown that has to do with Halloween, an event, a party, a haunted house walk, my keester is there! However there has always been one event that I had skipped year after year simply because many of my friends have told me that the event sucked, and was a waste of $10.00.

This event is known as the annual Center Moriches Spooky Walk. I had many people tell me that all the walk is simply a stroll through a woodsy area where people in the lamest costumes and makeup jump out at you and try to scare you. Sounded pathetic. For me to waste a night in October on an event, that event has to be huge, sweet, filled with spooky costumes, or illusions for me to want to go. Plus, $10.00 to have a bunch of people in lame get up jump out at me, sounded wasteful, and the thought of walking the spooky walk gave me gas.

However when I discovered last year that all of the proceeds went to Camp Pa Qua Tuck for handicap children, I figured that the $10.00 was going to a great cause, and that I would at least go and check it out, before I ragged on how awful it was. Besides, my initial negative thoughts about it was due to word of mouth. If my friends said it was lame, well most likely it had to be. However I went last year anyway, I figured why not, it could be fun if I just allowed myself to have fun, I knew if I went in with a negative attitude I would have a negative experience.

The Spooky Walk was held at Camp Pa Qua Tuck which is located in Center Moriches on 2 Chet Swezey Road. For directions to the Spooky Walk visit http://www.theatermania.com/content/show.cfm/section/located/show/115831.

When we got to the camp we walked through a path with a mob of other people. In all honesty I had no clue how they expected to get a yelp or scare from anyone seeing how it was too packed to enjoy the actual experience. As we walked the path, employees dressed in costumes would pop out from trees, and bushes and all of that other nonsense. What sucked was the fact that if you were not the very first in line during the walk, you were aware of the scare because kids up ahead would scream every time something happened, thus removing the anticipation, seeing how everyone behind them knew something was about to happen. Only that something was not scary.

My friends were right, you end up with people smacking into the back of your shoes practically tripping you as they try walking ahead, you end up wit kids screaming bloody murder, just because they want to be heard, and you end up with a headache.

The whole 15 minutes there were basically torture… but I kept thinking.. it’s for a good cause, it’s for a good cause. But crap, I’d like to of had a good time, only I didn’t. Those who were there to scare us were crudely dressed, the costumes were garbage, and those with makeup on trying to scare us didn’t even put any effort into looking scary.

For this year, I will be skipping. I would rather the camp ask for donations then to attend another horrible night walking the ‘spook-less walk’. The only thing spooky about the place were the drunks they allowed in. Lovely.

If you dare go to this boring 15 minute event go ahead and order tickets now at 631-878-1070. Also call for approximate dates and times.

You may as well just give them the $10.00 and skip on this one though. It’s truly a waste of time. At least the $10.00 though will go to a good cause. Maybe if people pay and don’t show up they will improve it next year? Or not?

The best thing about the whole experience was the cute little souvenirs you could purchase afterward.

Here is a description of the events taken from www.eventful.com.

Event Description:

A Spooky Walk through the camp grounds. Visit the haunted cemetery, the Forgotten Witches, the Haunted Trail, the Missing Pirates, the Mummy’s Tomb, the Sick Circus and so much more.

My feelings: The haunted cemetery was lame, and the tombs were poorly constructed. It seems like they have been using the same props since this walk began way back when. A little something new couldn’t hurt could it?
The forgotten witches…hehe, when I went through they forgot to add the witches! Where the heck are they? Oh out scaring the kids in the front of the line, totally forgetting there are 40 more people behind them. Thai haunted trail… they jump out with lame costumes here. The missing pirates… truly are missing. The mummy’s tomb, must of been empty when we went through. Blah! Waste, waste, waste!

It is my opinion that you pass up on this event if you are looking for a good fun scare. I do recommend the Dark Side Haunted House in Wading River though. For more info on this event call 631-369-SCARE.
