The 50 States of Our Great Country

The 50 States

As I look into my Family room and admire all my Americana décor I stand in awe of a picture that hangs over the couch. It is the United States Flag, and it reads, ‘We All Have a Place beneath the Star’s.’ So true, as I look at The 50 states and see the diversity and accomplishments of each state that sets them apart , and makes them each unique.

One of the ways to show our appreciation for our heritage, our place beneath these stars, is to teach our children the value of the flag, and how each state has something special to offer. One of the ways I do this is by playing The 50 States song to my class.

I found this treasure, believe it or not at the dollar store and I have researched this little song on- line and came up with nothing. The song is simply titled,’ The 50 States.’ This little CD is called ‘Learning Songs, by Sunny Day Studios, it has 20 songs on it and we love all of them. And, for only 1 dollar I found a goldmine.

Imagine, if you will , the song ‘I’ve been working on the railroad, all the live long day, I’ve been workin ‘ on the railroad , just to pass the time away.’ You got that tune in your head now don’t you?

Now sing the 50 states song to the same tune.

Fuzzy Peaches grow in Georgia,

Rhoade Island is the smallest state of all,

Mother’s day started in West Virginia,

Minnesota has the largest Mall,

Hoover Dam is in Nevada,

In Massachusetts the Tea Party was grand,

In Hawaii you might go to a Luau to dance the Hoola in the sand.

California’s golden gate,

Virginia’s got the Great Blue Ridge,

and don’t pronounce the’s’ in Illinois,

Kentucky’s horses race,

Indiana’s car’s set the pace

and South Dakota Buffalo roam.

Concord is the capitol of New Hampshire,

and Columbus is the capitol of Ohio;

Lincoln’s the capitol of Nebraska and Boise of Idaho.

I wonder have you ever walked the Oregon Trail?

Eaten an apple in Washington,

have you seen Alabama’s yellow hammer,

or read Mark Twain Missouri Sun?

Montana’s Crater is the deepest Lake,

Connecticut had the first state constitution,

Wyoming has the yellow stone National Park,

Delaware was the first state in the Union.

In Florida you may spot a flamingo,

Mississippi is a fun word to spell,

and Maine is famous for its lobsters and Pennsylvania for its bell.

Michigan is shaped just like a mitten,

And Louisiana shaped like a boot.

North and South Carolina share a special hiking root.

Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay,

Vermont’s maple syrup,

And go to New York to see a Broadway play.

New Jersey’s the garden state,

North Dakota’s wheat’s first rate,

And Utah’s lake is full of salt.

Arizona has the Grand Canyon,

Iowa and Kansas grow corn

Oklahoma has a well known son,

In Tennessee they sing till morn.

I wonder have you danced the polka in Wisconsin?

Or seen a road runner in New Mexico?

Have you bathed in the hot springs of Arkansas?

Or climbed a mile high in Colorado?

Alaska is the biggest state,

Texas is #2…

I’ve learned all the 50 States, now it’s your turn to learn them too!
