Tame Curly, Frizzy Hair in the Summer

We walked the aisles of every store in town that carries any hair care products looking for something my friend could use on her naturally curly hair during the summer. During the warm humid months of summer those beautiful natural curls want to frizz and fly away.

Sun, chlorine, heated styling tools, and salt water work against women with natural curls in the summer. We had to search for solutions to tame curly, frizzy.

Hair care solutions for summer frizzies

There are a few minor adjustments you can make to your hair care routine that will aide you in your battle from curls to frizz.

Use a quality shampoo and conditioner. Consider a shampoo with straightening properties. These shampoos and conditioners not only clean the hair shaft, but also seal the cuticle and are a little heavier on the hair than regular conditioners. They should contain nut, Shea butter or tree oils that help rehabilitate frizzy hair. Try to avoid shampoo or conditioner that contains alcohol, as it tends to strip the hair shaft leaving the cuticle vulnerable.

Smoothing and straightening conditioners are usually slightly heavier than regular conditioners. The added weight, although it’s not much, helps keep hair from frizzing.

This allows you to style with your natural curls or more easily straighten your hair for styling.

Shampoo less frequently

Help maintain the healthy texture of your curly hair by skipping a day between shampoos. The thought of skipping a day without shampooing may horrify you, as most of us incorporate shampooing and conditioning into our daily routine.

If you can only skip a day or two even that will help. Choose to skip shampooing on a weekend. Chances are, with curly and frizzy hair, you will not have an oily or greasy look from skipping one day of shampooing. It will help the look, feel, and health of your hair in the long run.

Cut down the heat

If possible, allow your hair to air dry. If, however, your hair is going to run amok when left to air dry, at least cut the heat down to medium or low. It will take longer to dry your hair, but remember that heat excessive brushing and stretching your hair under a hair dryer makes it more brittle. Brittle hair is more likely to break and guess what happens to the short pieces?

You got it. They turn into frizz.

Choose a style that accents curls and minimizes frizzy hair

You’ll have the best luck if you choose a hair style that is easy to work with and allows you to style it and seal it with a formula designed to keep the hair from freezing.

Curly hair that tends to frizz in summer heat is easiest to style by scrunching. Scrunching does not require that you blow dry your hair completely, although you can if you like. Simply apply a sealant or styling product that enhances shine and condition as you scrunch.

It’s not impossible to avoid frizzy hair in summer

If you have curly hair, don’t get discouraged. It is difficult, but not impossible to find hair care products that will help you keep your curls tame and avoid frizzy hair.

My friend, the one with curls, found several products to try. From among those, she narrowed them down to shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner, and styling mousse that worked ideally for her hair. She has an anti-frizz sealant and is confident that she will not lose her curls the minute she steps out into the summer heat.
