Hair care products for men who want waves fill the shelves cluttering our minds as well as our scalps. On a recent trip to my favorite shop I decided to put my current favorite, Sportin Wavs to the test and see how it stood up to another wave care pomade. Today I will be comparing Sportin Waves to Dax Wave and Groom.
Upon first glance, the first major difference I noticed was in the amount of ingredients. Sportin Waves listed Petrolatum, Water Aqua, Glycerin, Ceteareth-20, Mineral Oil Paraffinum Liquidum, Polysorbate 60, Oleth-5, Propylene Glycol, Paraffin, Hydroxylated Lanolin, Oleth-10, Microcrystalline Wax Cera Microcristallina, Fragrance Parfum, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Propylparaben, Benzyl Salicylate, Hexyl Cinnamal, Linalool, Limonene , Citronellol , Geraniol, Amylcinnamal Benzyl Benzoate, and Citral Benzyl Alcohol all on the back of a little can. Dax, on the other hand, only listed Petrolatum, Mineral Oil, Lanolin, and Parfum.
After making it past the science lesson I chose to test the Dax first. I followed the instructions and wet my hair slightly. I placed a nickel size amount of wave conditioner into my palm, rubbed my palms together and applied the product to my hair. The instructions called for a larger amount, but I do not have a normally thick head of hair. I brushed the product through and went off to work. Throughout the day I noticed my had felt a bit drier than usual and caught myself scratching from time to time. By the end of the day, my scalp felt dry and even a bit rough.
The next morning I put the Sportin Waves to the same test. Slightly west hair, product the size of a nickel, rub in palms, rub on hair, brush through and off to work. Throughout the day I did not notice any drying of my scalp. I was never caught around a corner digging at that spot behind my ears, wait that’s the dog. Well, you get the point. My scalp did not get itchy. But, my scalp was dry by the time I walked through the front door after work. This test did not convince me.
Over the next two days, I retested the products using twice as much product as I did during the first test. Two nickels worth of conditioner on the scalp and off to work I went. The Dax kept my scalp moistened all day, but I still felt itchy and caught myself scratching often. By the end of the work day I was happy with the outcome. A soft, conditioned scalp and we were making progress.
The Sportin Wavs worked better as well. My scalp stayed moist all day and there was still no itching. I am unhappy to report though the dryness did return about an hour after I returned home from work. Baffled, I still had one more test in store. The following two days I worked longer hours than the previous two and I combined the products. The results were amazing.
The Dax mixed with the Sportin Waves kept my scalp conditioned and without itch for 14 hours straight. Though I found that the products could not stand the test of my scalp alone, I did find that together they worked wonders.
To touch briefly on the price of the two products, both the Dax and the Sportin Wavs were both under $3.00. You wallet will not be stretched by purchasing both and mixing them together making one great product.
The result of my testing was simple. On short days and long days neither product lived up to my highest standards. Only when I mixed the two products into one pomade did it outlast my constantly drying scalp.
