Soft Surfboards – A Look at the Advantages and Disadvantages

Soft surfboards have a foam top instead of hard material on the top. They are typically only used by people who are just learning how to surf. These boards have a few advantages and disadvantages when compared to other boards. This article will discuss some of the advantages and disadvantages of soft surfboards.

Advantages

One of the primary advantages of soft surfboards is their safety. Because the board is soft, you won’t get hurt if you happen to hit something. Soft surfboards will also not harm anyone else if you hit them. Therefore, these boards are perfect if you’re just learning how to surf.

Another advantage of soft surfboards is their durability. Fiberglass boards can crack or get dings that need to be repaired quickly. Soft surfboards don’t sustain damage like the fiberglass variety. Therefore, you don’t have to spend a lot of time and money repairing your board.

One of the final advantages of soft surfboards is the maintenance required for them. Other boards require frequent maintenance. You will have to wax these boards frequently to keep them looking good. You won’t have to perform these tedious maintenance tasks with soft surfboards.

Disadvantages

While soft surfboards have their advantages, they also have a few disadvantages. One of the first disadvantages is chafing. The foam on the top of the board can really chafe your skin. This is especially a problem for you chest and inner thighs. You will likely have to wear a rash guard to protect yourself from this problem.

While durability can be an advantage of soft surfboards, it can also be viewed as a disadvantage for beginners. Because they can take a lot of punishment and not become damaged, these boards will not you how to care for a surfboard properly. This will be a problem if you ever upgrade from soft surfboards to traditional varieties.

These are some of the advantages and disadvantages of soft surfboards. They are much safer than traditional boards, so they likely won’t injure you or anybody else. Soft surfboards are also more durable than other types because they won’t get dings or cracks. While this durability is good, this attribute won’t teach beginners how to care for a surfboard properly. Therefore, they will likely damage their new board easily when they make the decision to upgrade from soft surfboards. These boards will also chafe your chest and inner thighs if you don’t wear a guard.
