Shabby Chic Decor – Vintage Comfort

The words “shabby chic” are tossed around a lot in the decorating world. However, everyone has their own idea of what shabby chic should look like – or not look like. Shabby chic is the feminine touch to a casual, comforting home décor. When you think of shabby chic, you probably think of your grandmother’s home or another older female relative.

Color Palette

There is only one color that is found in almost all shabby chic designs: white. White can be used as an accent or it can be used as the main furniture color. However, shabby chic is very similar to the style of cottage décor because there really are no rules. The color palette can be anything you chose, however you should keep in mind that shabby chic does use muted and pale colors. If you prefer the look of bold bright reds and beautiful turquoise blues, shabby chic may not be right for you.

However, if you’re stuck on a color palette you can follow Rachel Ashwell’s rules. Rachel Ashwell is the founder of the famous shabby chic design.

Rachel says “I don’t really follow trends as I stick to my palette of pale green, pale pink, pale blue, cream and ivories.”

Her color palette is very similar to English cottage design, which again can be made to look very shabby chic.

Furniture

Furniture should be soft and comfortable. Overstuffed is very characteristic of this design. Slipcovers and throws are a great way to help spruce up the look of existing furniture. Wood furniture is very characteristic of shabby chic and it is generally painted to a white color.

You can collect pieces from your own attic, family or friends, as well as garage sales, flea markets or even the store if you find that perfect piece.

Use patterns such as checks, gingham or floral. You can also use striped patterns to help change the up mix.

Decorating Accessories

Anything that’s lacy or vintage is perfect for shabby chic. Mismatched items such as your grandmother’s old teacups or old doilies are great for the shabby chic look.

Flowers are ideal when it comes to shabby chic, particularly fresh flowers. However, not everyone can afford to purchase fresh flowers on a weekly basis – so using faux flowers is also acceptable.

Candles are also very characteristic of this design. Scented candles are a great way to bring comfort into any room, so they work great with the comforting appeal of shabby chic.

Shabby chic is meant to be comfortable and classic, as well as functional and versatile. It is a mixture of vintage and comfort – and it will be sure to look great in your home. Shabby chic will bring that comfort you’ve been looking for and still look great for years to come.
