Rubik’s Cube Patterns

Let me start off by explaining that this article explains how to turn your rubik’s cube into some pretty cool patterns such as a checkerboard AFTER you have already solved it.

This is basically a list of color patterns that you can achieve with your 3×3 rubik’s cube after it has been solved. If you are not familiar with the common way to denote cube rotations, than I honestly don’t know how you are able to solve a cube, but at any rate here is what I will be using: F= front face, R= right face etc.
A ” ‘ ” after any letter means to rotate the face counter-clockwise rather than the usual clockwise as if you are looking at the face. A “2” after the letter means to rotate the face twice.

1) Checkerboard: (the easiest to do) goes like this: F2-B2-L2-R2-U2-D2. Another way to look at this is to rotate each opposite face twice. This looks even cooler if you can do the opposite faces at the same time, and is also easier to remember that way. The cool thing about this one is that it can be reversed using the same pattern.

2) Dots: U-D’-R-L’-F-B’-U-D’. This one can also be done by rotating the opposite faces at the same time, which means all you have to memorize is every other face: U, R, F, U.

3) Vertical Stripes: F-U-F-R-L2-B-D’-R-D2-L-D’-B-R2-L-F-U-F.

4) Cube in a Cube: F-L-F-U’-R-U-F2-L2-U’-L’-B-D’-B’-L2-U. My personal favorite!

Something fun to do when you have at least one of these memorized is to solve the cube quick without them noticing and quickly start the after-pattern. Once finished, say something like “Darn! I always get this close!” or “Oops…”
