Review: Jimmy D’s Griddle Sticks

A few days ago, I purchased a box of Jimmy Dean Jimmy D’s French Toast Griddlers. I came away unimpressed with them. However, I noticed the box had a $1 coupon good for any other Jimmy D’s product so I decided to take advantage of it and purchase a box of Jimmy D’s Griddle Sticks.

I’m glad I had the coupon because I don’t think these would be worth full price.

To be perfectly honest with you, when I bought these, I really didn’t think they were anything new because they looked very similar to something other brands offer. Basically, the Griddle Sticks look a lot like a corn dog. Only, they have a stick of sausage inside rather than a hot dog. I have purchased the exact same thing a dozen times before from a dozen different brands.

However, even though I wasn’t really expecting this to be anything unique, the fact it did come from Jimmy Dean did make me expect a bit more from it in terms of quality. And, unfortunately, that just did not happen.

I think part of the problem with this was the decision to use turkey sausage rather than pork sausage. I don’t mind turkey sausage but, for breakfast at least, I prefer pork. And, unless there is a significant effort to disguise the taste, there is definitely a difference. The Jimmy D’s Griddle Sticks did make an attempt. But, just adding pepper to it didn’t do much.

I’m not sure why, but this product also seemed to be much tougher than other brands I have purchased. It wasn’t to the point I couldn’t bite into them and chew them. But, I did have to make a bit more effort.

I am going to be fair and say these weren’t terrible. I did like them enough to have them for breakfast three mornings in a row. And, they were pretty filling. One was enough to keep me satisfied until lunch; I didn’t need to eat two or three of them.

Had they been from any other brand and been about a dollar or two less, they probably would have exceeded expectations. Unfortunately, the fact this is a product from Jimmy Dean and it was a bit more expensive than other brands did raise the bar a bit and, as a result, these fell short in my book. I would recommend them; but only if you have a coupon like I did.
