Product Review: Hot Tools Professional Pressing Comb, Model #1150

A wide array of hair styling tools ranging from curling irons to electric curlers to hair straightening appliances are available to help achieve that pristine salon look. I recently purchased the Hot Tools Professional Pressing Comb, Model 1150 manufactured by Helen of Troy and am very pleased. I purchased the Hot Tools Professional Pressing Comb to replace my decades old non electric pressing comb. Professional stylists still use the non electric pressing comb in combination with the electric hot stove which heats the comb to straighten hair. With the usual non electric pressing comb, there is no heat control on the hot stove to allow for uniform heating of the hot comb to straighten your hair. It is strictly guesswork and you have to find the right temperature for your hair through trial and error. You cannot adjust the temperature because there is no temperature control on the hot stove. The lack of temperature regulation is a disadvantage that is eliminated when using the Hot Tools Professional Pressing Comb.

When using the Hot Tools Professional Pressing Comb there is no need for an accompanying hot stove because Hot Tools pressing comb has its own temperature control dial. The rheostat dial has a variety of settings ranging from one to ten which allows for optimum temperature control. My hair type is thin and fine and the setting of two provides enough heat to straighten to the desired texture. Hot Tools Pressing Comb can be used on all hair types and has an eight foot long round cord to reduce twisting and tangling of the cord. The plug is polarized to fit only one way into the electric socket and should not be altered. The Hot Tools Pressing Comb features a 24K gold plating which maintains even and consistent heat in comparison to the non electric pressing comb which has to be placed in the special stove to heat to the desired temperature.

The teeth are widely spaced and it boasts a “pulse auto heat control” feature. The comb has a pilot light and a safety stand included which holds the pressing comb while is use. The safety stand protects counter tops from burns and scorches. The instruction insert gives the consumer a guide for recommended temperature settings for different hair textures. It offers a warning that the comb at its highest temperature “10” is extremely hot and caution should be observed at all settings to avoid burns and injury.

Directions for safe use
As with all electric hair styling appliances, hair should be clean and dry before using the Hot Tools Professional Pressing Comb. When straightening chemically relaxed hair, be careful not to touch the scalp with the heated comb. To straighten natural hair, section hair into strands not wider than two inches or one inch deep for best results. While combing through the hair with the pressing comb, hold the hair taut with the other hand. Use the guide to determine the best temperature setting for your hair type and be sure to do a test curl. After you straighten your hair, you can then proceed to set your hair using Hot Water curlers (See article entitled Bad Hair Days Begone) or curling iron. The Pressing Comb should not be stored until it is cooled and of course should be kept out of the reach of children.

I will not use it daily because I do not want to abuse my hair with excessive heat but it is an effective appliance to maintain your hairstyle after shampooing and drying your hair.
