Product Review: Glutino’s Blueberry Gluten Free Breakfast Bars

If you have been reading my reviews then you know that I’m always on the lookout for gluten-free items. For breakfast I usually eat a piece of toast each morning, but sometimes I want something different. So when I saw the box of Glutino’s blueberry flavored gluten free breakfast bars on the shelf at my local health food store I was excited. Then I saw the price: $6.29 for one box. I put it back on the shelf. A few minutes later I found myself back in front of the box wondering if I should buy it anyway. I stood there long enough to I talk myself into buying it.

There are five breakfast bars in the box, which seemed a little odd to me; it’s a product of Australia so maybe they don’t put 6 or 8 in a box like we do. Each bar is individually wrapped. The first time I unwrapped one of the bars, it reminded me of an elongated fig newton. The blueberry part is wrapped in a layer of soft bread with the filling showing on each end. The texture is a soft middle with a slightly grainy exterior. One blueberry bar with a glass of milk is a very satisfying breakfast.

Besides being gluten and wheat free; it is also free of trans-fat, cholesterol and dairy. The ingredients are as follows: chickpea flour, corn flour, tapioca flour and rice flour, raisins, dates, currants, fructose, pear juice concentrate, blueberry puree, inulin, canola oil, water, ascorbic acid, natural flavors, and sodium bicarbonate. It has 120 calories with 0.5 grams of total fat, 2 grams of protein and 25 grams in total carbohydrates (dietary fiber 3 grams & sugars 17 grams). There is an allergen warning on the box stating it may contain traces of peanuts, tree nuts and soy. For those of you counting carbs each bar is 1.6 carbs per serving.

I’ve looked at Glutino’s website and found the blueberry breakfast bars for $5.75. I also found it comes in three other flavors: chocolate, apple, and cranberry. On Amazon.com the breakfast bars sell for $6.29 a box. I don’t like chickpea flour; it just tastes nasty to me. For something that has chickpea flour these blueberry breakfast bars taste good. I’m afraid the chickpea flour is a handicap and keeps it from tasting wonderful or great to me. I do like the breakfast bars enough to try the other flavors.
