Priester’s Pecans in Fort Deposit, AL: Sample Delicious Southern Pecan Candies

If you have a sweet tooth and love pecans, then there’s a wonderful place on the interstate between Montgomery and Mobile, Alabama that will fulfill your desires. Priester’s Pecans, a family-owned business, is located on I-65 near the town of Fort Deposit, and has almost every variety of pecan candy you can imagine. The candies are prepared daily onsite and the best thing about the shop is that they offer samples of most of their candy delicacies.

Almost every time that I make the trip along I-65, I’m compelled to stop and pick up a few of the delicious treats. Their offerings range from bags of shelled pecans to pecan pie to brownies to chocolate covered pecans. And what would a southern candy shop be without the usual southern pecan treats – pralines, divinity, brownies, and pecan pies. Priester’s candied pecans come in a variety of flavors – rum, sugar frosted, honey glazed, key lime, cinnamon, and of course chocolate. My particular favorite is the Camelbacks, which I liken to a flattened-out pecan pie that is cut into rectangular squares and is just as delicious. They also have something called Pecan Fiddlesticks, which is made of milk chocolate, homemade caramel and pecan pieces, and it is their exclusive candy product. You can also get other varieties of nuts, candies, cookies, and cakes too. Their store in Fort Deposit has an ice cream stand and they offer other snacks for travelers on the go.

Priester’s began in 1935 as a gas station that began to sell candy to the travelers along the main highway between Mobile and Montgomery prior to the interstate system. Since the Fort Deposit area was a major pecan growing area, it offered the supply of pecans that the store needed to meet the growing demand. Fast forward ahead and you now have the largest homemade candy producer in the state. On a busy weekend, you will find the parking lot of the store filled with travelers headed to and from the beach, to football games, or on vacation. The rustic-designed store, which was rebuilt in the 90’s, after a fire destroyed the previous building, features a gift shop with a variety of gifts, crafts, and knick-knacks that highlight southern culture.

The store also has a viewing area upstairs where patrons can watch the workers shell pecans, make the candies, and package them for the sales floor and to ship to customers across the country and around the world. This is always a fun place to visit if you have time. Kids and adults alike will enjoy watching the candy being prepared. There are photos that highlight the history of the Priester’s Pecan Company.

Priester’s has an extensive mail order catalog that you can pick up at the main store in Fort Deposit and at its sister store in Perry, Georgia located on 1-75 about 30 miles south of Macon. The catalog can also be accessed online at: www.priesters.com. They offer a variety of gift packs and samplers that allow you to sate your appetite for distinctive and flavorful combinations. In addition to the pecan candies, you can order pecans by the pound, by the tin, shelled and unshelled, salted and unsalted.

The main Priester’s store is located on I-65 at Alabama Highway 185 (Exit 142), just 25 south of Montgomery, Alabama. The Perry, Georgia store is located off 1-75 at Exit 134. So if you headed to the big football game, to the beach, or even on a business trip, stop by Priester’s and get your favorite southern treat, pecan candy.
