New Year’s Party Games

Almost everyone celebrates New Year’s with a party of some sort. This year, make your party the most exciting and amusing on the block with a few fun games.

Guess the Month: Rummage around your house and dig through the recycle bin for old magazines and newspapers from this year. The library can be a place to get materials from as well. Cut out articles and pictures of events that took place within the year. Display the items and have your guests guess which month the event took place. This can be played individually or as teams. Whoever guesses the most right wins a prize of your choosing.

Charades of 2006: Again, search through magazines and newspapers for events that took place within the year. Cut them out and throw them into a hat. These events will be your titles for the game of Charades. Put your guests into teams so they can act out the event they picked from the hat. The team with the most correct guesses wins of course.

New Year’s Win Lose or Draw: This is similar to Charades of 2006 but your teams/guests will be drawing an event from the hat and drawing it instead of acting it out.

Whose Resolution: Have each of your guests write down 5 of their New Year’s Resolutions on slips of paper (5 slips = one slip for each resolution). Have them write their names very small on the slips as well. Then, add them all to a hat. Pull one slip of paper out of the hat and read it out loud. Everyone has to write down who they think made that particular resolution. At the end of the readings, the person who has guessed the most correctly wins. To make it more hilarious, read some of the wrong guesses out loud. Hopefully you won’t offend anyone or start a fight!

Guess Who: As an alternative to giving door prizes, ask questions every 20 minutes or so. Ask a question that relates to guests at the party such as “Who’s the youngest here?” and “Who’s wearing the highest heels?” Give a prize to the first person who answers correctly. This is a great game for those who want to win something and not have to worry about missing out because they are playing another game.

Board Games: This is a traditional and popular game competition played at most New Year’s parties, especially if you’re have a lot of guests (over 20 to 25 people). Everyone can participate in playing the various board games. Have 4 or 5 games to be played. Your guests will get points based on where they finish. For example, they’d get 4 points for finishing 1st in LIFE and 3 points for finishing 2nd in Candy Land. Once all the games have been played, add all the guests’ points and announce a Board Game King (1st place male), Queen (1st place female), and Jester (2nd place male or female). It would be great to have crowns and a jester hat to put on them!
