The Nebelung cat (Nay-bel-ung) is a new and rare cat breed whose name means “creature of the mist” in German. The Nebelung cat breed is recognizable by its steel grey coat and green eyes. The breed most resembles the Russian blue, with the difference being the coat length.
History of the Nebelung Cat Breed
Cora Cobb of Denver, Colorado, is the developer of the Nebelung cat breed. Cobb adopted a stray black shorthair named Terri, who had a few female kittens. Cobb gave one of these female kittens to her son, who bred the cat with a blue colored neighborhood tomcat. The result was two litters, each containing one longhaired blue kitten. One was male, and one female, so Cobb decided to breed the two together and see if the breed was true. These two cats, named Siegfried and Brunhilde, produced a litter of three longhaired blue kittens. Cobb contacted the International Cat Association (TICA) for genetic guidance in developing the Nebelung cat breed. TICA accepted the new breed in 1987, and Cobb wrote the standard for the Nebelung breed to exactly match that of the Russian blue, with a different coat length. Since 1987, the Nebelung cat breed has slowly grown in numbers, and is increasing in popularity.
Appearance and Personality of the Nebelung Cat Breed
The Nebelung cat is easily recognizable. The have a very long body, long neck, and a long tail. The head of the Nebelung cat is wedge shaped, large, and pointed. The coat is blue- grey, and tipped with silver guard hairs, which give it a shimmery quality. Nebelung cats actually have a dense undercoat of grey as well. The eyes of the Nebelung cat are green, although kittens are often born with yellow eyes that turn green with age. A yellow eyed full grown Nebelung is not acceptable for registration. Males have a ruff of fur around the neck which resembles a lion mane. The coat on the tail is often longer than the body fur, as is the coat on the hind legs. During the shedding months, the Nebelung cat may require twice weekly brushing to deal with the undercoat.
The Nebelung cat breed is a reserved pet. They are shy around strangers, and will often hide in the presence of unknown humans or loud noises. Nebelung cats enjoy routine and the presence of other quiet pets, and may not do well with young children or rowdy dogs and cats. The ideal owner for this pet is a family with older children, people with a quiet and established lifestyle, and senior citizens. The Nebelung cat breed is a devoted pet, and shows a great deal of affection to its owners.
