Natural, Environmentally Friendly Ways to Keep Deer Away from Plants

If you live in the mountains or in a very rural area you may have a deer problem. Deer are very prolific in many areas of the United States. They can be beautiful animals to watch and enjoy. They also can be very much of a nuisance. Deer love to eat plants. If you live in an area where there are many deer , than you already know this. You probably do not have very much shrubbery around your house. Certainly no beautiful flowers. Well there are some naturally and environmentally healthy ways you can keep those pesky deer away from your plants.

The first idea is to use something that has a very strong odor. Since we want to do this naturally you can use a very strong smelling soap. You simply put pieces of the soap all around areas that you want the dear to stay away from. Deer do not like very strong smelling things. You can hang bars of soap off of trees that deer like to eat and make look horrible in the process. When they get a smell of the soap they will usually back off of whatever they are eating.

Another idea is urine. Usually wolf urine. Of course deer do not want to be anywhere around where a wolf may be. You can usually by wolf urine in the gardening centers. You can also get it on-line. The smell of this will help keep deer away.

So will the strong odor of eggs, spread extra egg shells around the ground of your plant that the deer like. The calcium in the egg shell is also usually very good for the plant. I know roses, especially love it.

You can also spread cumin or any other strong smelling spices. Again, anything with a particularly strong smell will likely drive the deer away. You can get a special all natural solution at your local gardening center. It contains egg, and different strong smelling spices to spray right on the leaves of your plant. A warning must be made, though, all of these items can be smelled by humans too. They are not very pleasant, but the strong smell only lasts a day or so. Then the remaining smell is muted but can still ward off the deer.

Another idea is to put certain plants all around that deer really do not like. Flowers like Russian Sage, Lavender, and Daffodils, are all flowers the deer stay away from. They are also beautiful in your garden. So plant away with anything you can find to ward off the deer, and still have a beautiful landscape.

The last way to keep the deer away from your plants naturally, is to put a very high, around six foot, fence all around where you do not want the deer to be. This will at least make a blocking point so it is not so easy to get to your property and eat away at all those yummy plants.

Good luck in deer proofing your home. It is an arduous adventure. It also must be maintained and done over and over again, in most cases. But doing it naturally without harming your things or the deer is really your best bet!
