Mulatto Hair Care Tips

Hair care products are usually separated into three categories: Caucasian, African American, and Hispanic. Mulatto women are of mixed ethnic backgrounds. As a mulatto woman with half black and half white hair, I have learned the hard way that using the typical hair care products does not benefit my hair. Here are the products that work best on my hair.

The key is to find the correct mixture of hair care products from each ethnic hair care line. Mulatto hair tends to be thin, coarse, and curly. Caucasian hair care products are not strong enough to tame mulatto hair’s kinks and frizz. African american hair care products are too strong and will leave thin mulatto hair greasy and flat. Hispanic hair care products seem to work best but tend to be hard to find and expensive.

Shampoo is your first line of defense when it comes to hair care. Use a moisturizing formula and only wash your hair every other day. Find a shampoo with jojoba oil if possible. Not only does jojoba oil smell great, but it moisturizes your hair. Mulatto hair needs oils produced by the scalp in order to stay healthy and strong. Washing your hair every day strips it of this natural oil.

Use a good thick conditioner every day to keep it smooth and conditioned. Pantene is one of the few conditioners that keeps my hair soft and manageable. Pantene offers an African american line of products as well. Pantene Pro-V relaxed and natural daily oil cream moisturizer has amino proteins and is an affordable way to condition mulatto hair. These conditioners have more oils in them to keep your scalp healthy and to prevent breakage.

Washing and conditioning mulatto hair is just the beginning. A strong leave in conditioner is important to use. Neutrogena has a very strong deep conditioning hair mask. It is only meant to use once a week but is great to leave it in each day if your hair is really coarse. Depending on how you style your hair, you can leave it in until your next hair wash or rinse it out after an hour or so. You can use a deep conditioning mask in place of your regular conditioner as well for premium moisture.

Olive oil is a little trick that makes mulatto hair shiny and manageable. Use it the same way that you would a hot oil treatment. Massage a quarter size amount of olive oil into your hair paying special attention to your scalp. Leave it in for about five minutes and let the steam from your shower heat the oil. Then rise. This is the best natural conditioner you can use for mulatto hair. Your hair will be soft and shiny.

It is very important to protect mulatto hair from heat damage. Mulatto hair is fragile and prone to breakage. Hair dryers and curling irons damage your hair no matter what ethnicity you are so invest in a heat styling product. Thermasilk ahs a great heat styling spray that covers the shaft of your hair in a protective barrier. The heat styling spray keeps your hair safe from the intense heat while your hair dries.

I have found that African american hair care products make my hair oily and weighed down. Using Doo Grow at night helps my hair stay strong. I don’t mind my hair being oily at night while I sleep, but be sure to wrap your hair in a scarf to avoid getting any oil on your bedding. Doo Grow makes your hair strong to prevent breakage and promote hair growth. Depending on how coarse or thin your mulatto hair is, you may benefit more from African american products. The thicker and coarser your hair, the more oils you will need in your hair care products.

Mulatto hair care products are not sold in their own line, so you will have to find an appropriate mix of products for your hair type. Give these a try. Experimentation is the best way to find the perfect hair care formula for you. This applies to any ethnicity. Don’t give up the fight for manageable mulatto hair. Don’t be afraid of trying new things and you will be on your way to having the hair you have always dreamed about.
