Mow Your Lawn with a Better Lawn Mower

Once upon a time your grand daddy used to mow his lawn either by hand powered tools and huge scissors, but fortunately things changed. Then came the lawn mowers powered by gasoline. These gasoline powered mowers were easy to use as they only required pulling the starter cord a few times, or making use of the electric starter and the lawn was mowed in a few minutes. But the major drawback in gasoline mowers was that they were noisy and they polluted the air with their harmful emissions.

Then came along in line, the awkward looking lawn mower with its tremendously long, power cables plugged in an electrical socket. They required much care as many of you would either trip over them or might face a short circuit due to the high tension cables.

The new invention that has recently arrived is the battery-operated lawnmower. A battery operated lawn mower normally has enough power in which the operator can mow the front and the backyard by charging it just once, unless the lawns are too big.

Generally it all depends on the battery. Some batteries have the capacity to last for thirty minutes between the charges and some can work up to an hour. The most important thing about them is that they can be recharged, so they are not a waste once used up. You can always use them again and again. The average life of such batteries is five years after which they need to be recycled.

There are numerous types of batteries used, these include: alkaline batteries which are not used in lawn mowers, the other one is lead acid which is gradually being replaced by nickel cadmium and lithium batteries. These batteries are comparatively cheap but have low storage capacity.

When buying a new battery operated land mower, try purchasing the one which is powered by a nickel cadmium (Ni-cad) battery. These batteries can be recycled and are environmentally friendly, so they are better than the old lead acid.

In order to extend the life span of these batteries, try to be reasonable while deciding if it is time to mow your lawn or not. Don’t mow your lawn in wet grass because it exerts a lot of strain on the battery or the engine, and does not even provide much benefit to your grass. Keep the track on the growth of the grass. Don’t let them grow so much that you need to cut three inches at a time, as it is again bad for the battery, engine and the grass itself.

Ni-Cad batteries do not require any maintenance. The most important thing you need to keep in mind with these batteries is not to recharge them until and unless they are completely discharged. These batteries are said to have some sort of peculiar a memory. If you recharge the batteries when they are not in need, they will remember the state they were at when they were recharged and will expect to be recharged at that state only- even though they have a lot of power in them.

As far as environment is concerned we should all prefer to use battery operated or electrical lawn mowers because they do not cause any sort of pollution
