They even produce finished product soils that customers can bag themselves or order dumped on the area they choose. Self -bagging will save money, however. Also very helpful is the fact that their plants are all chosen with the Central Texas environment in mind, and they conveniently divide the perennials into sun- and shade-loving plants so that shoppers will know for certain they’re getting the right plant to flourish in their yards.

Thew Great Outdoors is an extremely popular nursery and garden one-stop for Austin residents. This is a large concern with high emphasis on environmentally friendly gardening and choice plants specifically to suit the Austin area soil and weather. They were awarded the “Revolutionary 100” garden centers of America. The place deserves a visit if just window-shopping. They will draw out rough planting plans for customers or even plant for them, which is something most garden centers never do. There’s a cafe on site so people can sit and enjoy a smoothie under the shade of huge oaks. Then there are display gardens everywhere and a pond near a huge waterfall where people can sit on a bench and enjoy the sights and the sound of the splashing water. The staff prides itself on their expertise and overall love and care for plants of all kinds. Oh, I almost forgot to mention that they also have a staff of professionals who do landscaping and irrigating with special emphasis on the conditions in central Texas.

Sledd’s is located right in downtown Austin. This might seem an inappropriate location for a nursery but it seems to be working for these folks. since they have been here and thriving since 1978! This nursery indeed does have everything. They stock tools and gardening implements of all kinds; outdoor decor like birdbaths, seating, and statuary; and every kind of plant conceivable from trees to perennials, annuals, shrub, vines and groundcovers. Their web site conveniently lists their stock by category so that people shopping will know that Sledd carries what they’re looking for. I love the fact that they, like the other two nurseries mentioned, concentrate quite a bit on plants from the Central Texas region that will thrive in this climate and soil. “The nursery has native cacti, succulents, wildflower seeds and bulbs. We also carry native mulches, compost, and soil”. It seems that people in Austin almost can’t go wrong with so many nurseries in the area that will offer the proper plants, give advice, help planting, and even landscape.
