Make at Home Hair Care Products

Growing up with a grandmother who was a mother during the Great Depression, I didn’t know until later on that you could go to the store and buy all of your hair care products. My grandmother made our hair care products and then occasionally my mom would take me to the beauty salon. There are lots of great homemade hair care products that are not only 100% natural, they actually do great things for your hair. If you will pick up some of the expensive specialty hair care products in the store, they have some of the same ingredients. The only problem with that is, they charge you for the “natural” part of that description. You can probably look in your cupboard, bathroom cabinet or refrigerator and find most of the things needed to make your own hair care products. Starting with shampoo, here are some of the ways to create your own at a minimum of the costs.

Making herbal hair shampoo takes a little effort but the benefits to your hair are wonderful. Herbal Shampoo consists of Castile Soap(soap made from various other oils instead of animal fat) Not hard to find and worth the effort to look. It can be made from coconut oil, jojoba oil, vegetable oil and olive oil. About 4 oz of this is sufficient for a nice size bottle. Along with the soap you will need some Rosemary which stimulates the follicles of the hair, Nettles, which stimulate hair growth, Sage which has anti-oxidants in it and lavender which helps with an itchy or flaky scalp. About 2 to 2 1/2 oz of each of these. You can get these herbs at health foods markets or garden centers. I like growing the sage, rosemary and lavender at home which cuts down on the costs.

Boiling these with about 2 cups of water then adding your Castile soap in an 8 oz bottle with the strained herb water, will make enough shampoo for several washings. This takes a little time to begin with but is worth the effort. There are also Chamomile Shampoo Recipes. This is basically Chamomile Tea, Water and Soap Flakes. This is another wonderfully healthy shampoo for your hair.

There are a couple of conditioners that though homemade, make your hair extremely soft and healthy. The first conditioner is an egg conditioner.
Take a couple of egg yolks, depending on the length of your hair and add 1 tsp of baby oil and about 1 cup of water. Beat the egg yolks until frothy then add the oil and water. Beat until entire recipe is foaming. Put on your hair, leave for about 15 minutes and rinse out. Remainder of conditioner can be refrigerated for up to a week without turning sour.

Another wonderful conditioner that can be made at home is The Avocado/Mayo deep conditioning recipe. This takes a cup of mayo with a whole avocado mashed. Blend them together in a blender or use your mixer in a bowl. This should look really creamy and mint green. Apply throughout your hair and wrap with a shower cap or use plastic wrap. You can even use a plastic grocery bag on this. Leave on for about 20 to 30 minutes. This will make your hair shine and feel silky smooth.

Another avocado conditioner that works faster and just as well is mashed avocado and coconut milk. Same procedure with blending but you only have to leave it on for about 10 minutes. Shine and moisturizing make this a perfect conditioner.

A great, easy hair spray that you can make at home is a chopped up lemon and water. Boil the lemon in a couple of cups of water. Let cool, strain and bottle and refrigerate. When cool it makes a great hair spray that has absolutely no chemicals and lasts for a couple of weeks in the frig…

All of these recipes need to stay refrigerated. They will all last about a week or a little more. Average cost per recipe is about $3.00 or less.

These are wonderful homemade hair care products that you can keep on hand with little effort. They are truly 100% totally natural and will keep your hair looking wonderful.
