Make a Green Breakfast to Start Your St.Patrick’s Day Celebration

Start St. Patrick’s Day off right with a bit of the Irish green, and make a green breakfast to begin your St. Patrick’s day celebration.

You need green food dye as the primary magic ingredient with which to make your green St. Patrick’s Day breakfast. The ones that come in the pack at the grocery store work well, but if you want a good solid green colour, try purchasing the professional strength food dyes from food supply or craft stores. The green colour will be much more intense. They usually come in very small screw top jars. The professional strength food colours are thicker and much more concentrated, so small amount of the professional green food dye will make a much greener food item. The professional strength food colours will colour many more food items than the tiny liquid ones purchased from a grocery store. Do be careful using them though, as they will make a stronger and deeper colour, and they will stain things like clothing and hands much more easily.

Here are a few food ideas to colour, for a green breakfast to start your St. Patrick’s Day Celebration.

Add the green food colouring to softened butter or margarine in a small bowl. Add a small amount at a time, until you get the shade of green you desire. You can’t remove it once it is in, so it is better to add small amounts slowly. The tubs of softened margarine work fine too. You can always quickly make more if you need to. This is a very simple process. Then spread the green butter or margarine on toast, bread, rolls, sweet rolls, pancakes or French toast for your green St. Patrick’s Day breakfast..

Repeat the same process with whipped cream. This is good scooped on top of coffee, cocoa , pancakes, French toast, crepes or waffles.

Use the green dye to colour milk. This may be especially appealing for children that don’t like to drink milk, but need to. Use the green milk as a drink in a clear glass so it can be seen from the inside and out. You can also pour it in cereal.

Mix green food dye into frosting to be used for topping sweet rolls. For rolls, and other green breakfast baked goods for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration, you can also add green sugar or cake decorations to make the presentation more festive.

Make your scrambled, fried eggs or omelettes green by adding green food colouring to the mix. (Dr. Seuss would be proud.) You can also add green produce to the eggs, like parsley, spinach, green onion or green bell peppers.

If there are children involved, let them help with the creations you make for your green St. Patrick’s Day breakfast.. They will have fun joining in the preparations. They don’t see some of these foods green every day, so they may enjoy the experience and it will make the day special for them too.

Set your green breakfast St. Patrick’s Day table using whatever appropriate green things you can find around the house or garden to add to the celebration and atmosphere. Green plants, placemats, napkins or centerpieces will brighten the table and make your green breakfast more colourful.

Enjoy the meal!
