Keeping Your Cat’s Litter Fresh

Nobody likes a house that smells like a cat litter box. Keeping a cat’s litter box fresh and odorless can sometimes be hard to do. Owning a cat comes with the responsibility of keeping them healthy, which involves clean litter boxes. By following a few simple guidelines, you can keep you and your cat happy. The following are helpful tips on keeping your cat’s litter box fresh:

• If you have multiple cats, you should have one litter box per cat. This will keep from filling up one litter box too quickly, which would cause more odors.

• Cats like a clean litter box, so scoop everyday. If it is too dirty, he might find a clean spot on your carpet instead. Throw the used, clumped litter away immediately.

• Go for the hooded boxes. They help keep the odors down. Also, cats like their privacy.

• Use good quality litter. I recommend Fresh Step Scoopable. It clumps great for easy scooping and is formulated with odor eliminating carbons. You can find this litter at pet stores and most grocery stores.

• Make sure the litter is deep enough. If the litter level is below 2-3″ deep, add more litter. If there is not enough litter, the box will be harder to clean later on.

• Once a week dump out all the litter and clean the box with soapy water and a small amount of bleach. Fill the box up with fresh litter. This will not only help with smell, but it will also stop the spread of germs.

• Clean the scoop after you use it to help stop the spread of bacteria and germs.

• Keep a rubber mat by the litter box to keep your cat from tracking litter all over the house.

• Keep the litter box located in a room that is not very populated, such as the bathroom, mud room, or laundry room. This will help keep the rest of the house odorless.

• It might also help to spray a deodorizer every now and then. I recommend Nature’s Miracle Ultimate Litter Box Destroyer from Petsmart. The spray is an unscented formula that fights the odor, rather than just masks it.

Cats are fun to own, but with them is the litter box. By using these simple tips, you can eliminate the hassle of having a litter box. If you keep a litter box clean, it will be like it is not even there. Both you and your cat will be more happy and healthy with a fresh litter box.
