How to Start a Grocery Delivery Service

There are a few basic steps that apply to just about any service business that you want to start in your community. If starting a grocery delivery service is a business you are considering the first things you need to establish are:

Is there a lot of competition in your area and how professional and successful are they?

Do you feel there is a market among those whom can have the luxury of getting groceries delivered which would include your middle income homes that love the service because of their busy lifestyle. How about the elderly and disabled in the area? This can lead to many customers and be a tremendous help to this population in the process.

Do you enjoy working with people and do you have a patient personality. This is definitely a people business and in order to get weekly repeat business (which is essential to growth) you will need to have a gracious and likeable personality. This is a wonderful job for those who have the gift of gab and yet know how to work fast and multi-task.

Once you feel like your community meets these criteria try to weigh the pros and cons of operating this business.

Pros
1. You can work from home and include much of your home expenses used for business as tax write-offs. This can be great for those with a family. When I first operated my local business my kids were very much part of the business. They had uniforms and learned how to work hard in addition to cultivating great social skills.

2. You can make a good living once you get those consistent customers ordering. When a customer has a good experience they are likely to use your service on a weekly or bi-weekly basis so your clientele continues to grow as well as your monthly revenue.

3. Statistics show that grocery delivery is becoming more and more popular. It is currently a 14 billion dollar a year industry and that is expected to double within the next few years according to Consumer Reports.

I have helped many people and families start their own grocery delivery services all over the US and I can honestly say there are simply not a lot of cons to this industry. Like any small service business, your monthly income is continually fluctuating which can be more frustrating than simply collecting a paycheck with a constant amount. But I always allowed this to motivate me to market my business in every viable way possible so that a steady flow of new clients would come in. The internet is such a fantastic tool in this business and it simply couldn’t be done in the professional manner it can be without it. My clients are set up with their website, uniforms, marketing materials, online order forms, etc. and these are all directly related to the internet. As you look at other services you will glean ideas and structure you would like to implement into your own business.

I’ve operated my own grocery delivery with my family for many years and have spent the last six helping other families start their own all over the US and all I can say is this industry continues to grow regardless of the economy. If anything, the necessity for people to work two jobs leaves them with very little free time so services like these are well worth it. Just like with any small business, your business can only grow and prosper if you put your heart and soul into it. I always tell my clients (and firmly believe) that if they work hard they can make this work and experience has proven that again and again.

I can honestly say I cherish the times my boys and I would get suited up while they were still little and go deliver to families and the relationships we build with the overly thankful disabled and elderly are cherished. We could honestly leave those shops knowing that we helped an elderly couple remain in their home because we could bring the essentials to them even if they couldn’t drive or save a blind couple from an exhausting day of buses and feeling around a grocery store. For the right people this is a great business. I’d love to answer any questions you might have and happy shopping!
