How to Make Your Own Reed Diffusers

Who doesn’t love for their house to smell welcoming and fragrant? And, it’s not enough to have the fragrance greet visitors at the door, but we long for the fragrances we choose to be in each room. Sprays are messy and time-released scents often fade between squirts. Solid fragrant products dissolve into a nasty-looking glob, and candles, well, they can’t be left burning while you’re gone, so they’re only handy some of the time.

Reed diffusers are fragrant sticks that are placed in a vase, or other container, and set in various rooms of the house. They are, though, extremely expensive to many people, with prices ranging from $25 to $100 per box! At that price, you’ll the average person will never see a reed diffuser in their home, but if you make them yourself, you can have the elegance – and the fragrance – without the expensive price tag.

Making your own reed diffusers is very easy. Start with a simple, clear glass container. Although it’s not absolute that you use a clear glass vase, the look is much nicer if the container is clear and glass. Not only does the glass container look nicer, but it allows you to easily see when it’s time to add more fragrance to the jar.

There are several different stick-type pieces that you can use instead of reeds. At a hardware or home improvement store you’ll find dowel rods that can be cut to the size you need. These are perfect for this project. You can also use craft sticks, skewers and similar wooden pieces. If using skewers snip off the points of the stick before using.

For the diffuser fragrance there are several products you can use, or you can make your own fragrance from things you have around the house. Strong and powerful fragrances work best. The scent must soak into the wood of the dowels before it will fill the room with the aroma.

Fill the glass container about halfway full with the chosen fragrance. Place three to five sticks into the container, cutting them to a size that will allow them to rise above the opening of the jar or container. When you first set the arrangement in a room allow several hours for the fragrance to be sopped up by the sticks. After the sticks are wet, and remain so, you can flip them over and place the opposite end into the liquid, to give the room a burst of fragrance.

Although scented bath oil works best, and is easiest, you can also make your own scents. Place apple peels and cinnamon in baby oil, then put the liquid in the container. Or, mix lemon juice with baby oil for a lighter scent.

The great thing about the diffuser sticks is that they’ll virtually last forever. The sticks need only soak up the liquid, so they don’t melt or shrink like candles. You may, however, need to replace the liquid when the scent begins to die, after a long period of time. Even then, you can often just add a little more of the same scent to the jar to refresh the aroma.

Purchasing reed diffusers can hurt anyone’s pocketbook, but when you make your own, you not only choose the scent you like but you also save a ton of money. And, you add an elegance to your home that isn’t expensive, but seems like it is. If you already have a decanter, and you have some great smelling bath oil, you have what it takes to start the project right away. Mmm, your house smells great!
