How to Make Homemade Cat Toys

How many times have you purchased expensive cat toys and your cat plays with the expensive toy for about two minutes, but yet will keep going back to play with that certain item laying around the house that really is not meant to be a cat toy?

I have spent a lot of money on store bought cat toys and have found many times my cats were not too interested in what I thought was a great cat toy. Yet, my cats would swat around hair ties on the floor for hours!

It made me start thinking that my cats would probably enjoy homemade cat toys that I made for them because who knows what they like, better than me. I came up with some ideas on how to make homemade cat toys, the cat toys can modified or changed to whatever works best for each person’s cat. These particular homemade cat toys have been very successful with my cats and learning how to make the cat toys is really easy.

Prescription Container with Beans

This really simple and easy homemade cat toy is a favorite of my cats and so quick to make! Use a plastic medicine container with a locking cap, the type that comes from the pharmacy and holds prescriptions such as pills. Make sure all medication is removed, rinse out and remove label. Then fill the container about 1/3 of the way with hard beans such as lima beans or white beans. Make sure the cap is locked and place on the floor so that your cat can roll the container all over the place. When I have felt really crafty, I have wrapped the bottle with fabric and glued the fabric to the bottle.

Sock Filled with Catnip

Use a clean sock of any size but a small size sock such as an infant or child size works best. Fill the sock full with catnip and then sew or tie with string at the end of the sock so that no catnip can escape. If your cat also enjoys noise, you may want to place a few small jingle bells inside the sock along with the catnap. However, make sure the sock is sealed properly as you do not want your cat swallowing the jingle bells.

Grocery Bag with Newspapers

This is not only a fun homemade cat toy but also a great recycling project that kids could make. Take a large brown grocery bag and fill about half way with balled up newspapers, then fold the top of the grocery bag over and tape so that the bag is sealed. Tap the bag a couple times to show your cat the bag makes noise and before you know it, your kitty will be pouncing on the bag.

These easy to make homemade cat toys are really simple and so much fun for cats, learning how to make cat toys does not have to complicated or difficult, items around the home can keep cat entertained and happy for hours!
