How to Make a Hillbilly Camp Stove

If you love the great outdoors, you love to eat outside. A Hillbilly Camp Stove can be used for cooking food, boiling water, and heating. It can be used in even the coldest of environments. You can make a Hillbilly Camp Stove with the simplest of materials. It is very inexpensive to make.

You will need an empty Tuna Fish can, hole punch, marker, 20 ounce soda bottle cap, a smaller bottle cap, a regular outdoor cook kit, denatured alcohol, matches, and water.

Tear off the paper on the tuna fish can. Take the soda cap and set it next to the outside of the tuna fish can. Take the marker and make a mark around the outside of the can. Now place the smaller bottle cap on top of the larger cap and make another line with your marker on the tuna fish can. You should now have two lines on the tuna fish can. One line is about half way up from the bottom. The other line is closer to the top (open) part of the can.

Take your hole punch and make holes along the bottom line about half an inch apart. The holes are about 1/4 inch round. You will have about 15 to 17 small holes.

Next take your punch and make a set of holes along the top line. These holes should be the same size, but about 1/4 inch apart. You will have 25 to 27 holes along this line.

Fill your tuna fish can with denatured alcohol. Fill it up to the first set of holes. Be careful not to spill any alcohol. Now place the tuna fish can on top of your cook skillet to stable it. If you need your skillet, place the can on a flat rock or solid surface. Keep in mind that this can will get very hot.

Use a match or flint to start a flame inside the can. It will take 30 seconds to a minute to get a good flame going. You can now boil two cups of water in your cook can for instant coffee, hot tea, soup, and even stew. It will take about two minutes to boil water. You can also use your skillet, but it will be too big for the tuna can. You will have to hold it while you cook.

It is important to make sure that air can get to the holes on the tuna can. When it is lighted with a cook can over the tuna can, you will notice that the flames come out through the holes like it would on your gas range at home.

You can even use these inside your tent in extreme cold weather. Just be careful not to start a fire that you can’t control. You will discover that this will add some heat to the inside of your tent. It is wise to have a lid that can go over the can for flame control.
