How to Help People with Bipolar Disorder

According to Wikipedia, bipolar disorder is defined as “a condition in which people experience abnormally elevated (manic or hypomanic) and abnormally depressed states for a period of time in a way that interferes with functioning”. In the United States, it may affect about 1-2% of the population, with up to 5% experiencing some of the symptoms.

Many popular magazines, talk shows, and health websites have drawn attention to this disorder, raising public awareness. Hopefully, this has helped those affected seek appropriate treatment without fear of judgment. Sadly, even with the increased focus on this devastating condition, there is often a lag of up to ten years in diagnosing it. Individuals and mental health practitioners often don’t recognize the behaviors and experiences as being linked to the disorder.

There is a prolific amount of information about symptoms and treatments, yet little advice for those of us who are affected by having family, friends or co-workers who suffer from bipolar disorder. Anyone is this situation knows how frustrating it can be dealing with cycling moods and sometimes erratic behavior. At times we fall victim to undeserved verbal assaults which tempt us to “fight back”. However, compassion and understanding are vital to aiding victims of bipolar disorder in their recovery. It is not necessary to excuse the behavior, but you should attempt to deal with it from a position of understanding and caring. Things you can do include:

  1. Convince the individual to obtain a comprehensive evaluation, commencing with their medical practitioner. Use statements such as: “This is a real illness just like diabetes – it requires medical attention”, “You can feel better”, “It’s not your fault you have this disorder” and “If left untreated, bipolar disorder usually gets worse
  2. Encourage the individual to take their medication. It is the cornerstone of treatment for this disorder.
  3. If you are dealing with a problem employee, speak to them privately about their behavior and explain how it is disrupting others. Encourage them to seek medical attention. If they refuse, or deny having a problem, keep a detailed log of incidents as well as a record of their performance. It may be necessary to fire them. It is a good idea to have a third party (such as a Human Resources rep) present for any discussions.
  4. In the case of a loved one, ask if you can go to therapy with them. It will help you gain a better understanding of the things they need to do.
  5. If the individual is angry, walk away. Discuss the matter at another time.
  6. Educate yourself about the disorder. Recommended books include: Everything Health Guide to Adult Bipolar Disorder and Loving Someone with Bipolar Disorder.
  7. Talk about the disorder. Don’t tip-toe around it.
  8. Help the individual with lifestyle changes such as eating well, reducing stress, getting enough sleep and exercising.
  9. Encourage the individual to join a support group.
  10. Remind the person you care.
  11. Accept their limits. Comments such as “stop acting crazy” or “look on the bright side” won’t help. Instead, use statements such as “I know you don’t believe it right now, but the way you’re feeling will change” or “I may not be able to understand exactly how you feel but I care about you and I want to help”.

Be patient. This is much harder on them than it is on you.
