How to Heat a MRE – Meal Ready to Eat

MRE’s are great to have in the event of an emergency such as a hurricane or other natural disaster. A MRE is a Meal Ready to Eat and they come in a large assortment of meals. They offer a breakfast MRE, lunch MRE and dinner MRE. There is also a wide assortment of dessert MRE’s for those with a sweet tooth. The complete meal MRE will contain at least 1200 calories per a serving. These meals are meant to sustain a person in extreme conditions. MRE’s are most commonly used by military on a regular basis. The civilian can purchase MRE’s online or military supply shops. Most of the times people will not come in contact with a MRE until a disaster strikes. FEMA will often deliver truck loads of MRE’s to a disaster area.

MRE’s are great, but how do you cook or heat them? This article will show you how to use your MRE’s and how to heat them up in bad conditions. After you received your supply of MRE’s you may want to try a few entree’s out. Some common entrees are macaroni and cheese, beef stew and other common comfort foods. These can be consumed right out of the pack without a need for heating or cooking. But, sometimes you will just have the need for a warm soothing meal while getting through your local disaster.

There are many different options that you can do to heat your MRE pack. One easy way to heat up your MRE pack is to place the pack in warm water for about fifteen minutes. If you can heat up water, you can always place your MRE back outside in direct sunlight for about a half hour. This will warm the contents to a comfortable level for consumption. If you’re out on a trek and have a MRE packet with you place the packet against your body to allow your own body heat to heat up your MRE packet. Another way is to empty the contents into a pan and heat under a low heat. Some MRE’s will even come with a flame less MRE heater. These heaters are often water activated and will heat for the appropriate length of time necessary for a good tasting meal. As you can see there are many ways to heat up an MRE and make them taste a bit better. Remember to not litter and dispose of your MRE packets appropriately.
